Weird Tranny Leak

Hey peeps, newbie here. I have a question on a weird transmission leak and was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. I had just purchased an 02 WRX, went to a friends shop and found that the tranny was leaking from one of the bolts on the left side of the tranny, not to mention that the tranny was over filled! Could this possibly be the cause of the leak or is there something else wrong? I really don't want to have to get ready to replace this if it is not needed. Please help, this is my first WRX. I don't want to get a bad taste for this car, I really like it and everything else on the car is mint. What can I do.

Thanks

Is the leaking red or black?

My first guess would be it was overfilled. Too much tranny fluid is almost worse than not enough... It'll foam up and create a lot of air in the fluid and essentially make the trans fluid useless. Could also cause it to leak out from excess pressure or just the fact that the fluid can sit in places that it's not supposed to be because of the higher level. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but put the fluid at the right level and it keep an eye on it.

Another more expensive option would be the rear main gasket... I've seen those go, but if that goes it would be black motor oil, not red tranny fluid.

Thanks for the advice. I will definately keep an eye on it. The fluid is more of a brownish color, which to my understanding was M/T fluid or similar to gear oil. I am no means a professional mechanic, But the leak just looked a little odd to be coming from a bolt from the side of the trans case. Thanks again for the help.

i can answer this with full pride.I had this same thing happen to me from over filling the tranny but anyway your leak would be coming from your shifter seal and its pretty cheap like 15 bucks for the seal if you know someone that can you help you drop your tranny rather then spending 600 or 400 like i did
