up pipe require tuning?

My cousin just got a 04 wrx, and we are going to start modding this bad boy up.

Ive done some research on this site as to what to get first, and have decided on an up pipe. Ive also learned that most things on these cars requires tuning, and my question is, does the up pipe require a Cobb type tuning or can we just throw the up pipe on first, then do the EM next? Also, same quesrion regarding a turbo back exhaust...

I searched around best I could for the answer but came up not sure still. Thanks.

PS. I have many years being as mechanic on EFI vehicles, just the rex's are a little new to me. Thanks again!

You will good to go with just and up-pipe and without a tune...the ECU will learn...but you may need to bypass the EGT if/when it go's bad.

Is there a link somewhere to how to bypass the EGT?

Also, I have read that BOV's will make the car stumble between shifts. Is this a big problem on the 04's? Are there any aftermarket BPV's out that you can hear louder than the stocker? My cousin, being a teen, wants that sound, even though ive told him its un necessary at his stock power level.

I think for X-mas we're going to get him a STS. I'll be searching the forums for the best one.

Youll need to get a tune after the TBE, that will put you into what the kids call stage 2

You should be good with the UP and no tune. TBE will need tuning.

you don't HAVE to tune the 02-05 just because you changed the up or downpipe. It will make gains without tuning. The tuning helps, but it's not required.

The main reason you need a tune with a TBE on a 06+ WRX/04+ STi is due to the fact that they have the 2.5L engine and the 02-05 WRX has the 2.0L. The 2.0L doesn't push as much air as the 2.5L does (I know Durrr

) so there isn't as big of a risk of boost spike. Whereas with the 2.5L motor you will run into that. ESPECIALLY when the weather gets cold like it is now. It was 30 degrees this morning on the way to work.

Like these guys have stated, the only thing you will really encounter will be a CEL due to removing the cat in the up-pipe.

I have an up pipe and and a tbe and i don't have a tune (yet) and it is running fine. I know before you guys yell at me i am buying a utec and getting a tune it is not that far in the future i just got to get the money and i am not running my car hard ya but you will run into a CEL with no cat on the up pipe.

The last owner had the intake and the bov tuned i added an up pipe and full tbe with no cat so yes my car has already been tuned with the first set of mods that are on the car but not with the tbe and up pipe

up pipe require tuning?
