Hello All!

New WRX owner! I have always been a gear-head racing cars and motorcycles. Stopped doing it to have kids now my kids are doing it with me. The WRX has always been a feasible dream car for me and now at 49 able to make it happen. I have the base model with manual transmission. Loving the vehicle except for some awful rev-hang most noticeable between 1/2. I have many years driving MTs, but this rev-hang is really grating on my nerves! This is my first modern production MT. I noticed it a little for the test drive, but the short trip in moderate traffic hid this condition. I learned to wait until the REVs drop at the optimal range for smooth shifting. However, this time is a solid three seconds and sometimes can be dangerous in certain conditions. I am VERY concerned with premature clutch failure when shifting before the REVs drop. I drive the car as designed. Never hard launching ( not into it), but spirited in the turns and short acceleration runs while in motion. Drove a STI before the decision that did not have this issue. Found out later the STI had been re-flashed with a custom tune. Research tells me this rev-hang is programmed by design:(. This may have been a deal breaker for me had I know about this. I can't risk warranty with an access-port.

Has anyone been able to get the dealer to reduce the rev-lag via ECU adjustment?
Is my concern about premature clutch fail from this rev-hang valid? Subaru will most likely say user error id fails early.

Perrin short throw shifter is a must. And a Perrin shifter stop. As far as the dealer covering your warranty I have a 2017 base model with a Cobb tuner running stage 2 plus with ETS 3in cool air intake ETS 3 inch exhaust no catalytic converter no resonator no Muffler also running aftermarket recirculating blow off valve and I have had no trouble with the dealer covering any of my warranty work running a cobb off-the-shelf stage 2 plus tune. Set your worries and concerns at ease my friend the transmission can handle a lot of abuse and so can the clutch I drive mine like I stole it everyday and it loves every minute of it sitting at 28,000 miles I drive a lot for work love my car add some upgrades you'll love yours too

@JerseyDriver welcome to our little slice of heaven. Im glad you finally got yourself a dream car. Ive loved them since I was very young and Im on my 3rd :)

I have noticed a bit of rev hang on my 18 as well, its one of many little things on my list of adjustments I need to fret over after my break in period ( I keep a log file for reference ). On the 16 Im working on the accessport did a pretty fantastic job at cleaning up the throttle position and it put alot more of the focus on the drivers foot rather than som desired emissions standard or "smooth ride"

That said I dont think I can in good conscience recommend tuning a brand new car, especially if you are concerned for your warranty. It is kind of dealers choice weather or not they are willing to warranty repair a drive train that you as the owner have modified. The FA20DIT is a pretty robust platform but they are not infallible and if you ever need major warranty service involving Subaru of America the will query ECM for changes and determine if the changes may have caused or lead to the failure. It might be worth discussing with your local service manager, Some dealerships think accessports are great while others think its dangerous.

On the other side of that arguement, Cobb is a great company and they have a team of really dedicated techs that are reliable and responsive if you deicde to go that way. I can also personally voich for Eric from torqued performance as his tuning work is excellent.

Once again welcome to the community, oh and before I forget dont forget to wave :)

Thanks for the response. I don't have the guts to test the warranty waters. It is frustrating when something like this keeps a person from fully enjoying their hard earned vehicle! Even if the rev-hang was cut in half I would be happy! It could be argued it is dangerous? Having to wait three seconds to engage clutch causes the car to slow too much. Shift too early and I think the drive train is getting worked too hard. This is when Subaru says the worn clutch is my fault. Good luck with your ride. I would be excited to hear what changes you make down the line. I've been acknowledging other WRX owners on the road. My son always parks next one if there is one in a parking lot and takes a picture. They are reasonably priced and practical cars that are fun to drive.

I test drove a ford ST. Did not have the same fun factor for me. I would be in heaven if it wasn't for this rev-hang!

Rev hang is annoying but it isnt dangerous and it wont burn your clutch out. Just drive the car normally, dont try to get around it.

As others have said the only way to eliminate it is to tune it which likely puts your engine warranty in jeopardy. IMO (and Im not a tuner or mech or a lawyer) a COBB or MAP OTS stage 1 tune wont hurt your motor on its own. The kicker is if your engine has an existing weakness or problem from MFG that would cause it to break normally, even untuned, then its going to go no matter what. THEN SOA will likely blame the tune and not warranty it. Maybe not, but you certainly increase your chances Its a shit situation but all dealers/MFRs are like that now.

My 17 WRX went 33,000+ miles (in one year) before I moved to an STi. 2/3rds of that was on a MAP Stage 1 tune and a Cobb CBE. MAP tune was excellent. It got rid of the overboosted throttle, power delivery became linear just like a normal car, no more power falling off a cliff after 4300 rpms, and the power increase was somewhat significant. COBB tune is similar but with less power. I drove it hard and Never had a problem with knock or any issues whatsoever. I never had an issue with the driveline or clutch. YMMV

Word of caution: If you do regular maintenance through your local Subaru dealer - you may want to check to see if a "re-flash"
will void your warranty if you are concerned about that.
My 17 WRX has got 21,000 and I only have two after markets. One is a K&N air filter and the other is a Kartboy short shifter kit.
Only had it to dealer once.

Welcome JD! I'm also a newbie and just ordered an 18' WRX premium CVT in world rally blue! I expect to have mine by mid august and don't really have any immediate plans to do any performance mods (at least until after the warranty period is over :|). I come from a BMW 335xi coupe which I had done some minor performance mods to but I had to trade her in and get something cheaper because...family =/

I'm excited to have joined this awesome community of fellow WRX owners though as I understand it is a pretty tight-knit one :D
