I have a stock 04 wrx I bought 4 days ago and I am going through the fix list. I’m pretty sure the td04 is toast, but I can’t find an answer to a question no matter how I google it.
Will the wastegate still operate if the turbo is not working?
I have no boost as far as I can tell (no gauge) I can’t hear any turbo noise of any kind. Idling in the driveway I can rev it at the throttle body but the wastegate does nothing. I don’t see any cracked vacuum lines. Thanks for any help.

AFAIK the wastegate is only going to open to dump excess boost pressure. If you have no boost there's no reason for the wastegate to open.

Also, you aren't going to generate much/any boost at idle or low RPM. Chances are you won't hear much noise from a stock turbo unless you get the rev's up.

Ok thank you for the information. I’m sure the stock td04 is toast. I’m going to source a good used one, or buy a rebuild kit for the one I have I haven’t decided. I still need to replace the front lower control arm bushing, and get some replacement struts.
