Starting a new build for an exhaust on my 2006 impreza wrx. Car has a stock uppipe, Cobb down pipe, one cat, and tanabe catback exhaust(resonator, muffler). My current plan is to take off the muffler and go with straight piping from the axle back. And eliminate the catalytic converter. Any thoughts on how well the car will perform and sound with just a resonator? Should I go with a high flow cat aswell to keep some sound down, as I want the car to be louder but not overkill. I already have 5 ft 3" 316l .065 tubing, and 4" 316l .065 tubing for an exhaust tip. Anyone who knows anything about how well my idea will work I would greatly appreciate your opinion. Pics of current settup and new piping will be posted if needed.

If your gonna go straight pipe from axel back and remove the cat as well why not just kick the resonator to the curb as well and go turbo back straight 3"
Be aware though when you start messing with taking cats off you will need some kind of tune to make everything run correct or else you will have CEL and other problems.

check with your state law to make sure you are not over any noise voilations. because the police will hear you for miles with that setup.

your idea will work fine. its been done hundreds of times.

you will need a tune without question.

See my deal is my buddy has his 06 sti straight piped no cats or resonator and Its undriveably loud. I want mine meaner and louder but not overkill. Either I keep the resonator and go with straight piping after that or delete the resonator and keep the muffler. What option would be the more reasonable one?

I don't know many wrxs that are not unbearable loud with either one of the ideas your thinking but If you are looking into getting a mean boxer rumble that makes your ears tingle get I would just try to find a good deal on a DP back exhaust.
But if your determined to try what you have in mind try looking around on youtube for sound clips. Im sure you will get an idea what it would sound like somewhat like that.

Like stated above you had better look into your local laws and noise ordnance or else your have the pokey listening for you everytime you drive your car.

What kind of EM do you plan on doing as well afterwords?

What do you mean by EM? I don't wanna buy an exhaust seeing I already have a decent DP, and a tanabe catback exhaust. Anyways I'm a Tig welder by trade and producing a quality exhaust won't be a problem. It's just I wanna make sure I don't have to remake this multiple times before I get it right

Laws don't matter to me, I live in the country and everybody in town drives trucks that are loud asf anyways. I have people ripping dirtbikes, atv's, street bikes, diesels, cars all up and down my local roads all the time haha. No one cares around here

Gotta love the country
EM is engine management if you remove your catalytic converter you will have less restrictive air flow which increases your air intake. Your ECU wont know whats going on and will get a check engine light.

I emailed a very popular local tuner today about the subject. Not sure exactly how much it usually runs to retune just for an exhaust. Would they have to put it on the dyno?

I have only done OTS maps myself but Im pretty sure shop tunes always go on a dyno for the best bang for your buck.
Shops can modify a stock WRX and get some more power but since you already have some mods like your DP and axelback along with tossing the cat you should def see a increase in power after a tune.

Most people usually get a parts list lined up before they get ready for a tune so they can put the parts on and hit the tuner to kill two birds with one stone.

Plenty of members here deal with shops with good reps maybe one will chime in and clear the air if Im mistaken.

Good luck Man.

just run screamer pipe :)

essentially its just a downpipe. no resonator no muffler. just a few feet of pipe to direct heat and exhaust out of the engine bay.

One of the best local tuners in my area won't even touch my car with the catless settup. Any other ideas on getting a good map?

wont touch a catless setup? thats complete BS. either hes lying to you because he doesnt want to tune your car, or it means he doesnt know how. it also means he has never tuned a racecar as they are all catless.

use a different tuner. plenty of e-tuners out there. i hear good things about Mike @ Phatbotti, Eric @ Torqued, and of course JR @ wherever he is these days lol.

there are dozen more really good ones too, im sure ppl can chime in.
