Well are you stock or modified? Doesn't matter a whole lot since the early USDM WRXs had glass tranny's. Doing donuts is fun but also stressful on the gearbox so i would say either you blew the synchro for first gear, or killed the gear itself. A cheaper option would be your shifter popped out of socket but it doesn't sound like that's the issue. Could have also been the fork but I believe that wouldn't let you shift into any gears if that is broken.

 

The only mods are a turbo back exhaust with catless dp and an intake. would it kill first gear even when the problem occurred when shifting into second? im just confused on that part. but yeah i have heard the 03 trannys are weak

 

Well the fact that you ground 2nd gear tells me the syncro may have been effed up. Now it's potentially destroyed and you can't get back into first. There are guys with a lot of tranny destruction experience that can chime in but that's my .02.

Can you put it into gear with the car off? Might be worse than just the synchro.

Hi, after chewing my way through 8 gear boxes in my classic scoob i can confidently tell ya that yr box is screwed! sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its true. Two of my boxes did the same with problems at selecting 1st. Soon after both boxes shit their load.sorry.
