The rear suspension in the GD (02-07) is trash. As somebody who owned both, that's the biggest difference. that and the 15+ backseat is surprisingly spacious.

It's functional. The car has a top mounted intercooler (TMIC). If you pop the hood on a Subaru with a hood scoop you'll see a shiney metal heat exchanger right underneath it that demands outside air...

I'd be more concerned with the chassis than the engine. Rust will kill the car before the engine. STi's hold enough value and drive well enough that the engine is not the biggest factor to consider....
