That is NOT a factory subaru hitch. I will look again but im almost positive subaru doesn't make one for the wrx. There are hundreds of aftermarket parts for these cars, and hitches are one of them....

drain the engine oil and see if there is any metal in it. it will look shiny or have a greyish tint to it. also pull the down pipe and check shaft play and look and see if oil is in the downpipe

ill try and find something more definitive, but basically drive it till you hear the noise. Then get it on a lift and try to duplicate it on the lift and listen with a stethoscope.
