Rod Bearings

Hi guys,
I own a 04 Blue STI for a year now. Got an uppipe, turbosx downpipe hi flow cat and a cobb stage 2 91 ooctane since 6 months. I hit 90k km. Now my rods bearings are done and i need to open the engine....
Is it something that happen often? Is it the stage 2? Is it my oil pump that sucks and an oil starvation did that ??

I'M gonna rebuild with Forged Pistons(any advive?)

thanks for your time,

2 biggest causes are detonation and bad oil. It could be the pump, but it rarely ever is. You're gonna want to replace that while you're in there.

You're going to want to get rid of the whole oil system...unless you know for without a shadow of a doubt that every speck and flake of the bearings is out of your oil system. If the shavings of the bearings are left behind...it can and will harm the new engine and turbo.

what kind of forged pistons would you put there? Just stage 2 91, Don't want to go further.
Forged pistons worth it ? I just want to be sure i'm not paying all this money to rebuild it in 2 years.

WHat do you mean by detonation? Cobb map too generic?

newtothegame 03-23-2012 08:55 PM

Some will argue that the Cobb OTS maps can/will cause issues in the long run. How long idk. I have known people to run them for over 2yrs before they got a protune or anything like it.

If you're not ever thinking of reaching 350whp/350wtq or more. Then you can skip on forged pistons...as long as you have a good tune.

They are ok for daily use. For people that beat on their cars, it can cause problems in the long run.

I've seen people blow up a motor on OTS maps. Jave who never gets on the forums anymore...he had a engine failure that was related to his Stage 2 OTS. Granted it took a little over 2 years for it to happen...its the long haul that makes it suspect.

<-- I'm one of them. I had Cobb's Stage 2 OTS map on my 2007 WRX for 3 years, 10 months, and almost exactly 75,000 miles (from 2/2008 @ 11,200 mi. to 12/2011 @86,200 mi, to be more specific) before I got a protune. I keep good records :D
