So if I wanted to make 280whp or more should I get the 18g or vf39? Since I really don't wind the rpms past 3,500 rpm witch turbo do you think would be work. would the tranny last at 280whp ( I am pretty sure it would.)

Thanks guys

the VF39 I'm going to call "small" and the 18G is basically "medium-large". There are about a dozen widely used turbos IN BETWEEN those two. Why you singled out only those two I have no idea why.

The VF39 is a quick spooler give or take mostly because it's small. I doubt it will get you to 280whp though. Also it sure won't do it before 3500rpms. You're driving the wrong kind of car if you want big numbers and don't like high revs. Turbos need exhaust gases to make boost (and thus add flow which adds power). Exhaust gas is largely proportional to RPM meaning if you don't use higher RPMs, your turbo ain't doing much. If you really don't want to drive past 3500rpm, I'd leave the stocker on there. It's a nice turbo, it's just small. It reaches max boost in a properly tuned car about then on the 2.5L so it would seem ideal for your driving style.

The 18G is a much bigger turbo. It's still well suited for the 2.5L though but it is going to spool much later. You can actually make 280whp with it though but again, it's not a great turbo if you rarely go above 3500RPM.

You seem to want a car that makes 1000whp by 1500RPMs from a 4-cylinder. Me too, keep dreaming.

As for your tranny, you can break it at stock power levels if you drive like an asshat. If you're responsible, 280whp will not break it. You get fewer mess ups at that level though. A single bad step and it's gunna snap.

lol you are right dude. I do want 1000 whp by 1500 rpms lol Yea I have to wake up and stop dreaming..... The reason why I picked them too because thats what cobb has to offer. I was going to try to just use thoses ots maps... but I guess I have to get it tuned. I would be very happy with 300whp.. Thats my goal on the stock tranny...Thank you everyone for the help and the imformation

You can run that much on the stock tranny. Just takes alot of precaution. No slamming gears or too hard of driving. I would look to the 18G at a minimum. Check out blouchturbo.com. They have a nice list of turbos for the car with some nice options and a little explaination about each. That might help you some there also.

the 18G's a great turbo for the 2.5L, don't get me wrong. It's just not anywhere near full boost at 3500RPM. If you don't mind actually staying in gear till it actually puts down real power, it's a very balanced turbo choice for the 2.5L and should hit about 300whp yes

How come everyone is doing a vf39 and not the vf43?? Don't the STI have a vf43? Wouldn't that turbo work well too??? I see all theses OTS maps and they say vf39,It seems to me that the car would make more power under the vf43.

Thanks guys

the 07 has a vf43 but prir to that it was a vf 39 not a lot of 07 STI ownersselling their turbo yet so the maps are for the 39 but you can use a 3 as a base map if you have a 43 then get it tuned.

i find it funny that it was stated prior that you can gut a 06/07 uppipe. gutting consists of physically breaking up a cat therefore you cant gut what you dont have! and yes the infamous vf39 crack is indeed cosmetic in 9 out of 10 cases. not to mention it can be repaired if wanted, basically that crack is similar to heat cracks you can develop on brake rotors, where yes they look bad but usually cause no harm what so ever.

Has anyone made over 300whp on the 06 0r 07 wrx? I wan't like 320 or 330 whp.. As long as you drive ok and not stay in boost all the time the tranny should be fine? Have far has ya pushed it on the stock trannys?

Thanks
