FMIC or TMIC

so I'm saving up for a new turbo and intercooler, If I where to go with the APS SR40 turbo could I get away with using the APS topmount or would I have to go with a front mount. my goal is a 400hp daily driver, the turbo can do it and if a there is a topmount out there that can too I'd like to go with it

being that your in alabama I WOULD go with front mount.... the reason is because of the heat there.... there are TMIC(Top mount intercoolers) that can handle 500hp.... im sticking with a tmic untill i get back to the lower 48 but thats only because im stationed in alaska....

I pushed over 400 whp on a TMIC, however with the flow rate of the SR40 you might be limiting yourself in the TQ area.. I was only able to pull 361 ft lbs of TQ out of my setup with the restrictive TMIC.. By "Restrictive" I am referring to a Perrin TMIC. with a GT35R. But you could probably get away with a TMIC, try to find a used cheap one to try out..

SR40 flows 595 @ 14.7 psi
GT35R Flows 880 @ 22 psi.

TMIC unless you want more lag and bling. That turbo doesn't flow enough to require a FMIC

04 STi 16G powered lagless fun

so are you saying the GT35R would be a better choice for a Topmount setup

No I'm sure he's saying the opposite. A GT35R is way too big for a tmic...

Never buy two of the same mods. If you want big power even eventually, go with the FMIC off the bat, doesnt matter what turbo you have as long as your tuned for it, and once you have your FMIC set up, your good to go and you dont have to worry about selling your aftermarket TMIC that everyone told you to buy.

+1 with jamo. im sure u could get away with an upgraded topmount, but ## numbers will be bigger with a fmic. i agree with not buying 2 of the same mods. i wanted to replace alot of parts out of my 03, and don't want to spend the money again for the same mods, so im going with an sti. lol, that and i have enough saved for one. lol.

rollin on 17's now and they're dirty

im sure the giant APS TMIC would support it but you will probably make more torque with a fmic just like everyone else said.

Well, it really depends on what you want to get out of your car in the end. Personally i don't want to deal with the attention, safety issues and lag of a fmic, so I decided to go with a tmic and meth. I know this setup will support everything I'm planning to throw at it in the future, so I'm not worried about having to upgrade. The reason I bring this up is because the number you mentioned (400 hp) is attainable with a tmic, especially if you are willing to consider meth injection. Purchasing a tmic doesn't necessarily mean you're not planning for the future.

shoaf you got to think about where he lives and how hot it gets.... go with the front mount.... tmic would do fine but in the summer you would suffer BAD heat soak....

If you make me look impress me....

I don't live in AL and don't know the climate there.. Elevation has a more dramatic effect the "Heat Soak".. Besides, I am not pushing towards a TMIC, only stating that it is possible.. Acutally if you read my posts I openly admit and display via my graph that a TMIC limits TQ horribly on larger turbos...

Thanks for the props, I can't wait to get the block fixed up so I can retune with my FMIC, meth, and other goodies in hopes of reaching 600whp..
