F%#ked up my intercooler help?

Hey i just bought a used ssac tmic with samco hoses and original y pipe for 200 dollars shipped. I decided to clean it up a bit and after reading i decided to try the simple green automotive degreaser method, so i put the intercooler and a full jug of simple green with water into a container, it was probably 1 part simple green: 8 parts water. I let it soak for a day and the next day i rinsed it off, but i could still smell the simple green in between the fins so heres where i mest up:

I decided to soak the intercooler in just water to flush out all the simple green inside it during the afternoon, but I forgot to take the intercooler out that night and it sat overnight, when i came to it in the morning now i have all these white spots all over the intercooler and even some inside the fins, What do i do now?

the white spots is just the aluminum oxidizing. just how steel produces rust, aluminum produces those white spots you see. There are probably some cleansers you can use to help break it down, but I usually scotch brite the metal until the oxidation is gone. Only way to prevent that oxidation is to either chem film or anodize the aluminum. being that its an intercooler you cant scrub the fins so try to see if someone makes a product that helps retard its growth so it doesnt get worse. as far as removing it, maybe a bead blast with a really small, soft abrasive media? Try calling around metal finishing companies in your area and see what they can do for you.

Also another tip, dont ever leave bare aluminum in hot water unless you want one ugly looking piece, or any water for that matter. The water is going to accelerate the process of oxidation on aluminum just like steel. If you leave it in hot water though, it turns black. Most people think aluminum doesnt oxidize because it doesnt produce iron oxide aka rust, but it produces aluminum oxide which most people dont tend to notice. If you really care about how it looks, after its cleaned i would get a clear anodize (mil-a-8625 type II class II clear) that is the code for the standard clear anodize.
