De-blinged Prodrive Axleback

IMO, the Prodrive oval tip axleback is one of the best looking exhausts for the WRX. The oval tip is gorgeous, and it exits low out the back of the muffler so as compared to the stock unit, very little of the muffler is seen. The tip fits the bumper cut-out perfectly, and of course the sound is wonderful - a deep boxer rumble without being loud. Mine is installed on an otherwise stock exhaust.

I do not care for the bling look of a shiney muffler, so I bought some steel wool, brake cleaner and a can Rustoleum 1200 degree flat black spray paint. After taking the gloss off the stainlees steel with the steel wool and thoroughly cleaning the surface with brake cleaner spray, I taped off the tip and painted the can with 3 light coats. The paint dried quickly and I installed the axleback an hour later. I really like the way the muffler "disappears" under the car! The black paint finish seems quite durable so hopefully it will hold up well.

Looks like the perfect exhaust to me. I like the black much better than the bling. Great job. How does it sound?

Clean and tasteful. Very nice!!

I, too, am interested in how it sounds. Post a clip if you can.

This is one of the quietest mufflers (axlebacks) on the market for the WRX when used on an otherwise stock exhaust - it's just a touch louder than a stock STi exhaust in this case. When cruising along with the windows down, it's noticeable from inside the cabin but not overbearing - it does not drown out wind or tire noise, and you can still carry on a conversation without raising your voice. With the windows up, you can still hear it but it's just barely louder than stock. This to me is important - if I need to travel, I don't want any extra noise.

On the outside, it's more noticeable but not enough to draw "unwanted attention." Like other straight-through mufflers, the more you step on the gas, the more you hear it, but even at full throttle it's not obnoxious like some exhausts can be.

However, if you're running an unresonated midpipe, catless DP or both, it gets considerably louder.

The tone is fantastic - deep and rumbly without being raspy.

Niiiice, I've always liked the look of the prodrive oval tip, very classy. Why not go with a whole cat back though?

By the way, I like the rally armor flaps too, I'm thinking of getting some to save my paint which is being murdered by my new wheels.

Justin, thanks! The flaps really do save a lot of wear-and-tear on the car - they are well worth it!

I did not do a CB because I wanted to retain the stock midpipe/resonator to keep it on the quiet side.

Do you have any sound clips of the exhaust? I think it looks great, and I've been looking forever to find an exhaust with a sound and a look that I really like.

I hit the Subaru Challenge last weekend and there was a white STi there with the SPT exhaust, and I thought that one sounded great. I'm leaning towards that one.

The SPT 3-inch CB is a nice exhaust! It will be louder than my set-up though, which is very "civil." I've heard something about the SPT being on backorder, so check before buying.

Yeah, I believe it is on backorder. It must be a pretty decent exhaust because I can't imagine it being on backorder if it sucked.....

Not that goofy, I have seen it a few times before.

I was originally not that thrilled with the "mudflap look" but after seeing the beating the rocker panels were taking on my '06, I gave it some more thought. I know the guy personally who owns Rally Armor through our local club so I decided to give them a try. While the look has grown on me somewhat, I am absolutely thrilled with the protection they offer the car, and how the side of the car stays much cleaner.

Here is a link to the flap section of the Rally Armor site -
