With $20,000 what year STI do you buy?

My 2002 wrx is up for adoption and has already found a very interested family. So I basically have 20 grand give or take for a new ride. So.... STI is all that is on my mind but, what year? I'm thinking 2004-2007 with under 60k miles. I'm not a newbie to wrx's but never drivin an sti and only know what I've read and been told about um. Just curious what minor differences there are between years. Thanks for any input.

2005 for sure, nicer interior, and the wider fenders...plus 5X114.3 hubs have stronger wheel bearings

I got my '04 STi with just under 30,000 miles for $19,500. but i would definitely agree with basco, '05 interior is a lot nicer IMO. its all up to personaly preference/ availability though.

PLUS... the 06-07 STi's will be well over the 20K mark.

Looks wise I like the 05 and the 06-07. I've heard the 06-07 trannies are a little beefier than the 04-05. Any truth to this? Everything I've read basically leads me to believe that all sti trannies are borderline indestructible. I guess it's pretty much just down to looks and low miles. I'm pretty stoked either way, there is really no other car that I want. Sti owners thoughts...??

Garage
The trannys are the same. The 07 has slightly different 5th and 6th gears but they have equivalent strength. Syncros break when they get old. It's no accident you see that more withe 04, less with the 05, and not much with the others. They're OLDER. Sports car + manual transmission = burnt clutches and blown syncros.

Yea that makes sense. My 02 wrx (glass tranny so they say) was stage 2 with a pro act clutch kit with a 102000 miles still running strong, so I think I'll be more than fine with any STI tranny. I was just curious, it was just comment made by an owner that drove an 06 sti pushing 500awhp an claimed they were a little stronger. Probably cause he owns the 06, lol. Either way I'm real curious in the differences I'll notice between my 02 and a STI. Alls I want to do is a stage 2, I got a liter bike if I really feel the need to post 10's.

The 07STi has a bit better gearing (bit longer), other than that... Pretty much the same.
