Would this compromise the structural integrity?

Please don't ask why, lol. If I can do it, there will be a thread about why. Can I cut a hole, maybe a little longer than a credit card, same width, where I circled in the door step/jam metal. Just in the top layer under the plastic trim
It's not for hiding drugs though that would be a great spot.

My guess is that it would compromise the rigidity and would therefore be a bad idea, but if not that would be really, really cool.

Edit: Than again, this is just sill panel, right? Frame is underneath...

basco 11-14-2011 09:17 PM

it shouldn't affect anything (Trust me I'm an Engineer LOL)

so that means you ARE gunna use it to hide drugs?? lol and no it shouldnt really effect anything with such a small cut anyway its not like your cutting a whole block outta that side of the car

I'm interested to read the thread about why you want to cut a hole there

Chase 11-14-2011 10:42 PM

Give me 3 weeks to get the car, one week to get around to the center dif replacement, then I'll start with the fun stuff. :)

Zaridar 11-27-2011 02:23 PM

interesting?? wondering why also...

Jontheginger 11-27-2011 09:25 PM

Structurally no, you wouldn't have anything to worry about. If you are worried about it possibly bending the metal by accidentally stepping on it or something you could put a doubler to go around the hole. Roughly a half inch from the edge of the hole outward would do the trick if you use 1/8th inch aluminum. In order for it to brace properly you should weld it I . Tig would look the best unless you are an experienced mig welder.

Chase 11-27-2011 10:01 PM

I'll keep that in mind, thank you.

Chase, saw your old car at pre just now while I was dropping mine off for the finale tune on my 4th motor "hope its the last one"... Did it always have the mickey mouse looking sticker on the rear glass or did the new owner add that?

Chase 11-30-2011 04:53 PM

That's my deadmau5 sticker :D He's kind of a big deal:http://www.youtube.com/user/deadmau5?blend=1&ob=4

What was he doing there?

4th? Jeez dude, sorry that sucks. You had Rallitek do your first build right? I guess they've all but sluffed off the Subaru side, now it's all IPD Volvo mostly.

turmic 11-30-2011 05:54 PM

Chase: I feel like I need to be on a E pill to enjoy the constant beats of deadmau. ;) Beats just don't do it for me anymore or I'd be breaking out the crystal method cds.

BLAZE2099 11-30-2011 07:42 PM

Your just begging for rust man, take the advice and weld it and spray it, at the very least bondo and spray bomb.

Chase 11-30-2011 07:53 PM

Kirt, I enjoy Deadmau5 drug free since 2003! JK, I love my electronic music and have always just pre funked a bit before shows ;) Probably a good thing I never tried any party drugs lol.

Randy, thanks, and that is excellent advice. I will absolutely be sealing up the cut.

black beast2 11-30-2011 08:11 PM

Long story, but yeah rallitek did the first 3 first 2 went within their 90 day warrenty period so it got covered this last one the timing belt tensioner bolt broke on the hwy, rallitek said wasn't their prob...when pre got it apart all kinds of things were wrong so I'm not verry happy with rallitek and their work anymore. I'm trying to get compensated from rallitek so well see how that goes

Didn't know that panel was aluminum..... if its sheet metal you can't weld aluminum to it.. you could use rivets... still wondering what exactly the hole is for..... ;)
