What's the "advantage" of 0w-30 oil???
 
I've been looking around for different brand of motor oils and i've come upon a discovery. A few companies are now making a 0w-30 viscosity. It's normally labeled as race-only motor oil. What's the "advantage" of that stuff? I know the 0w and 30 have to do with temperatures, but........

The 0W is the low temperature cranking viscosity, or "winter" rating. SAE 0W rating is 6200 at -35 degrees celsius. The 30 is the viscosity of the oil at 100 degrees celsius. It's all about flow at a temperature.

However this really doesn't have anything to do with it's race ability. If you look on NASIOC there are massive debates on what's the best oil to race with. In fact, Subaru race oil (only available in Japan) is 15W-40 I believe.

Okay, so what's "better" about having a lower twmperature 0w? I assume that running a 40 instead of a 30 would be "better" because it's got a higher temperaturea rating? I live in the central valley of CA and it hits over 100 degrees daily in the summer and 40 degrees @ night time....

Flow at start-up. A zero weight oil will flow better at a lower temperature, so when you first start up you don't run into oil flow problems. That's why a lot of race engines run a pre-oiler, and why a lot of manufacturers are going to lower and lower weight oils.
I know I've seen somewhere where MOSC or DumDum have discussed changing oil weights. It all has to do with engine efficiency and lubrication needed for certain tolerances; too thick and you won't get enough oil flow and too thin and it won't lubricate well enough. Research is the key.

A full synthetic will out-perform a 10w30 dyno juice and get better mileage.
