Trying to hook up a relay

I need a wire that has 12volts going through it when the car is off, but when the car is started and running, the voltage to that wire is off. Would the acc wire on the ignition do what im needing it to do?

You need a NC or ND relay. (Normaly Closed or Normally Discharged) These relays are more rare, especially steady state which is what you need (DC, electrical). I'm still in the process of finding the one with the specs I need.

Alright, couple of questions I have to ask. What is the circuit for? What is opening the relay contact? What is on the relay contact? I may have a 12volt DC relay you can use. It's not an automotive relay, it's industrial. I've used them before for shutting subwoofers down with a push button but I need to know what the circuit is for before I can really give you any advice.

basically I have installed my power trunk kit(how-to coming soon) and have to wire a relay into place for power to cut off when the ignition is on. I bought a 8 pole relay 12VDC from rat shack and wired it up to where 1 and 5 were closed until 3 had power applied to it(1 going to the truck solenoid, 3 being the power when ignition is on 5 being constant 12v ). From my understanding that should have worked but when the power from the ignition was on the relay wouldnt trip. So either my understanding of how it works is incorrect or the relay is bad.

It's because Radio Shack only sells normally open (NO or NE) relays

Ok, first I need to correct what you said. This is a 2-pole 12VDC relay. It has two NO and two NC. It sounds like you have the right relay but it's just wired wrong.

#5 is your wiper, you need to put constant 12VDC on there. #1 is your NC contact, it goes to the solenoid. #7 & #8 are your coil. These operate the relay. Put your power through these when the ignition is on.

The problem I see is that when the ignition is off, your solenoid will fire. I would have to assume you have some switch between the relay and the solenoid as your control, but I hate to assume especially when it comes to someone else's vehicle.

Look at the attached, if it's like your relay then there should be no problem with my explaination. If the numbers are wrong, oops. I've labeled it as to where each wire needs to go.

ok I will try that. I have the solenoid wired to my keyless entry box so that is my switch.

Thanks.

Just let me know if it works. If not I have a few more ideas but I might need pictures if you can supply them.

I probably should have clarified. The Radio Shack locally that I went to only sells normally open relays... They might sell NC at other locations.

Actually, you might be thinking switches. A standard relay is always NO and NC. A switch can be NO or NC or both.
