Get a wagon. You can ope it while the car is running. It unlocks with the door lock button on the door. I can't tell you if you can open it with the sedan. I'm pretty sure there is a trunk popper in the car that should work while the car is running on the sedans.

There is the lever by the driver's seat. There is no button to open it. You either need the key or the lever.

Is it just me or does the trunk lever for the '04's feel a little cheap. Every time I pop my trunk it feels like the lever is going to break off

Try putting an STi spoiler on the stock WRX trunk and springs and then see what happens. It feels even worse now lol.
