Because Subaru uses some of the crappiest painting practices of any car company. In '04, the dealer actually bragged about how much weight it saved.

Again, I took it to the dealerships body shop and had one of the head honchos there use the rubbing compound on my car and it worked so he suggested I go buy some and use it. He told me the kind I can buy isn't too strong so it shouldn't hurt my paint. I just used a Meguiars brand of it and it worked really well and everything looks good. Washed and waxed after I got done. Only reason I used it is b/c the body shop guy told me to and it was okay.
