Taking off 04 WRX STI spoiler will mess up aerodynamics?

I dont like the big wing on it and I want to replace it with a 04 WRX spoiler (non-STI).
I read somewhere that if you drive 140 MPH with no spoiler on the STI it is dangerous. Is that a lie right?

Where are you going to drive 140MPH at legally? And if you do it will be in a straight line and then you could/would just lose downforce. If you are worried about aerodynamics, dont forget about that scoop protruding on your hood.

...good points, Joshua.

The advantage of the weight savings is far greater than the disadvantage of losing some aerodynamic properties as the result of removing an 04-07 STi spoiler on a car that is daily driven - even at highway speeds. Many simply do it for aesthetic appeal, but the weight savings is usually the biggest reason.

But, in a way, max3, that's true. If you drive at extreme speeds, the aerodynamic properties of the STi spoiler will help stabilize the car and it is slightly more dangerous to drive that fast without it. The horizontal part keeps the rear end planted to the ground and the vertical supports help keep the car going straight.

Sometimes weight in the rear end is a advantageous thing. ::Sigh:: I will not get into it. Because it's just taking this thread OT.

Remove the wing if you don't like it, if you were going to notice a difference you wouldn't be asking this question to begin with (that's not an insult).

Don't spend a lot on a wrx trunk, a lot of wrx guys will trade you and maybe pay shipping because they are trying to rice out their car and the huge wing plays into that.
