Maybe you're looking at the part that needs to be pulled up to be able to shift into reverse?

I had the same question the first time I got in an STi, so I asked the dealer. He told me it was a lock so that you can't go into reverse by accident.

I think the dealer was BSing you bro. As far as I know the Safety portion is held in the tranny...*No syncro* So there will be no 5th to R.

All I know is that I couldn't get it in reverse when I tried until I pulled it up.

i asked my co-worker who has an sti and he said that the plate is the reverse lockout. you pull it up and it allows you to go in reverse. so you and i are right.

REALLY? Wow my appologies, I thought that was some sort of joke....It is really used for that? Thats neat, you would think that would slow you down trying to get to reverse fast.

I stand corrected

Duh im a moron.... 6 SPEED

Thats neat tho. Wow im suprised never heard that, I rode in them before I guess I never went into reverse with the STI
