LED under headlight DRL install
Hey guys,
New to the forum! After a lot of searching, I couldn't find a good writeup for an "Audi-style" LED DRL install... So I researched, collected info, and took a leap to do it on my own! Here are the result...
I wanted a "clean" install, with NO wire tapping... Didn't want to give SOA a damn thing to question me on !Thumbs Up
Here is the add-a-circuit location
I used the "blank" that was available on the bottom row, towards the right. It's switched, works with the key, and is always on, so it makes a good DRL. Won't drain your battery. The other circuit is the footwell lighting I have, on the lighting circuit, so it works with my headlight switch.
The strips are available on Amazon or at almost any big box... they were pretty cheap. I would suggest a good pair of wire strippers and I personally used butt connectors. I may get on home heat shrink in a bit, but ATM I'm not concerned (summer). You want side-firing strips.
I stuck them so that wires were on the "inside" of the headlight, right near the grill. The wires tuck under the gap between the headlight and the grill pretty cleanly!
Grounded the negatives on the radiator screw close to the mounting location. Carried the positive across the grill, secured with zip ties, attached to the cable that opens the hood!
From there, I routed the positive (both connected together, carried by a lead wire) through hte side of the engine bay, into the fender well, and down a metal "tube" that I saw in the frame (drivers side).
Made on small hole in a grommet in the drivers footwell, out to the space between the sheet and the frame where that tube was.
A few more zipties, and we have a clean install!
Anyone else need any more info or pics, lemme know!

Personally, I would have gone a little farther along the headlight, but that's a really clean install! I would love to see them lit at night!

I'd agree. I think it woulda looked a little cleaner and OE if it extended all the way over to the end where the top meets the side of the lens on the fender.

Nevertheless a very innovative idea. 👍

I've seen them when they extend all the way... I have to say I like this better! For some reason, this to me looks clean, whereas the full strip looks... A bit too full.... Thanks for the feedback guys. And haters go'n hate, but I like it :)

I could see taking them back to the amber reflectors though... Now that I look at it... Good news is, that's the easy part to fix! :) all the way back up the curve is still too much though, IMHO. I do wonder what it would look like above instead of below...

Haha, so are mine lo-brows then?
I mocked it up, didn't like it as much...
Not to say that it couldn't be someone else's cup of tea!
and the install would be easier (but only just a bit)
