So I have been shopping around and reading everything I can get my eyes on. I'd like to install an aftermarket head unit on my '16 wrx. My main goal is to buy and install a head unit that works with everything the stock one does ie reverse camera, and steering wheel buttons. I have found many models that say they will fit my car but upon further research it is hard to say if any of them will work with the camera and steering controls. So if anyone has done this, please shine some light my way!
I would like the replacement to have navigation, touch screen, and be able to be hooked up to an amp.
Your goals are pretty in line with the rest of the market. I didnt see you mentioning cheap and thats a good thing. Head units that can reliably interface with your hardware and add navigation services typically will carry pricetags around $600- $900. As far as retaining your steering wheel controls you will typically need a secondary interface device like a PAC controller. Crutchfield says that iDatalink makes a controller to re-add your steering wheel controls to an aftermarket head unit. As for your rear view camera mose dual dinn full screen units give you at least one AV input. You will need another adapter box to run from the stock reirview camera input, you may need to create your own RCA breakout cable using the stock lines for video data.
As for particular unit reccomendations I have always like pioneer. They are also one of the only brands to offer both apple car play and android auto out of the box. I think their 6000 series unit is the lowest to offer apple car play and android auto. Under that you are limited to one or the other. Most of heir navigation units offer at least one rear view camera input and their higher end units offer 2 imputs. They also have HDMI inputs if you want to use your phone or a video game system ( cause dogg we heard you like xbox so we put an xbox in your xbox)
I hear you arctic, I don't mind paying good money. But I need full functionality out of everything in the car then. Has anyone seen anyone else whos upgraded their headunit? Also im hearing that I will need to get a new dash bezel, is this true, and if so can it be from a 2016 wrx? wont that one also have the button cut outs?

Yes. Here's what you need:
1. Receiver (duh)
2. Metra Axxess ASWC-1 SWC module for steering wheel controls
3. Harness - 3 options:
- Get the Metra 72-7552 and splice into factory harness for SWC wires and Vehicle Speed Signal wire (Pins 4, 13, 14, 19 in the picture shown here), or
- Get 2 Metra 72-7552 harnesses and hack 4 wires from one to the other into slots 4, 13, 14, 19 so as to avoid messing with the factory harness, or
- Get a hold of SVXdc and his 20-pin harness, which would be plug-n-play and also avoids messing with the factory harness. I believe he also sells the Metra ASWC-1 and the factory USB adapter
4. Metra Dash Kit # 95-8905b
for Double-Din
5. Optionally, you could also buy the Metra AX-TOYUSB to retain your center console's USB port
The GPS receiver can be mounted on a flat area anywhere on the dash or trunk lid for the best possible reception, so the spot you choose really depends on your appetite for running the cable. Personally, I first ran wire to the passenger side right next to the tweeter grill but the supplied metal strip wouldn't stick to the soft touch dash material. So I went with the easier route and mounted it on top of the head unit itself for a stealth/OEM look. I haven't had any problems with reception thus far, even though it is not as ideal as mounting with a clear view to the sky
So far this has been the most helpful but I am still afraid to order anything due to my lack of experience in this field... So I think Im going to wait for someone else to post about how they did it on their 2016
on a side note. i *think* there are a few direct fit models. but you will probably be paying a premium for them. the bezels are made to be flush and stock looking as you see in some of the pics.
I did a headunit in a '16 STI with rearcam/steering controls today if you still need some help?
