Factory Speaker Size

I was just trying to find out the speaker size that will fit right in to an 04 STi. I have a friend with an 04 2.5RS and it looks like his are 5 1/4 in speakers. But he says that I would need some kind of mounting kit to put any speakers in my car. Anybody able to help out?

Front speakers are very thin and not many aftermarkets come that thin. I don't know exactly how it works, but Best Buy tried charging me 400 for install of front two speakers.

It's called a spacer ring. You make a ring out of MDF about 1/2 or 3/4 inch thick that allows you to mount larger speakers without cutting sheet metal.

but won't that interfere with the speaker screen that is molded into the door panel?

I haven't put speakers in my car yet so I'm not sure, but I doubt it and if there is a problem you could just use the one's that come with the aftermarket speakers, although if you do this it would be a good idea to put window tint on so you don't get robbed by dirty thieves.
