jwtarbaj, looks like we have conflicting info! Agree to disagree, if that's what the valentine 1 says in the manual than I assume it's the right way to mount that model. On the Escort website, they say this about their models:
"Where should I mount my radar detector?
For maximum performance, your detector should be mounted level on your windshield, with a clear view of the road.
Note: Do not mount your detector behind the tinted area at the top of your windshield. This will reduce its laser performance dramatically. "
Now I don't know where to mount the thing permanently!
This statement should concern anyone regardless of what brand detector they own - "For laser, moving away from the hood and its sun reflections helps a lot."
On another note are you aware Mike Valentine, V1 creator was also co-creator of the original Escort (all subsequent models were developed off the original).
Another note the best defense against Laser aside form a jammer is to turn on your headlights. It helps to block out the reflection of the laser from your headlights.
That Escort is gold i've had one for a while now haven't seen a ticket yet but the Valentine is where it's at, cant beat thos direction arrows. But the Escort is great, good buy
if you go to that radebusters website other detectors have far out performed the valentine
I have a beltronics pro RX55 which can be had for under $200 since it is an older model. It compares very well to the V1 and passport (radarbusters) Just thought I'd throw that in there for you folks that don't want to spend large. I am quite happy with mine (paid $143 new e-bay) Cheers
399.99 is not bad I thought they used to be like 500. So if my back window is at 35%, is it pointless to get the V1 . All Ive heard is good things about them
I have the Escort Passport X50, and my car has 5% tint all around. It still picks up radar and laser all the time. Does anyone know why the X50 Blue os $50 more than the X50 Red? BTW I have the red one.

Not pointless. It's less likely to get you in trouble gunned from behind, besides they could just pace you from behind with no radar. Tint effects laser more than radar anyway.
why do you all think the V1 is the only detector with full coverage? i have a crappy $100 Whistler detector and that saved me numerous time from the back too. most detectors are 360 degree protection

Having 35% tint on the back will affect it a bit, but i've got the same on my back window and my v1 picks up signals for quite some time. Easily a couple of miles out the back window. I've got mine mounted to the left of my rear view window. I love it, no tickets since I got it.

It says on the website that blue leds cost more than the red ones, hence the bump up in price.
although i have not owned one i know many who do, and i think the V1 is top notch. im thinking about picking one up now that i have to drive 12 miles down a 4 lane freeway that is 55mph for some mystical reason i cant get a straight answer on.
can anyone provide a review where the V1 does NOT get exemplary marks or another detector is reviewed as superior?
Are the detectors you guys are talking about able to detect the radar far enough before the cop can target you? I can't understand why people get them as the police over time just keep upgrading their laser detection. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I had a Cobra a few years ago and it did nothing for me.
