Does a roof rack fairing have the potential to scratch the roof? I want to get one but if there's a likely chance it will mark up my roof, I'll pass? Any input is appreciated.

I have a 44" Yakima fairing and it comes with four little foam pads that you stick on the bottom of the fairing and four little clear stickers that you put on the paint. After five seasons, when used properly, there has been no damage. I skipped the stickers on the paint one year and the foam pads rubbed a little bit of the paint off, but I fixed that with a little bit of rubbing compound. Moral of the story: don't be lazy.

Thank you for that. That's good to know. I definitely won't be lazy. I have the oem cross bars, any thought as to what fairing fits? I've read only the inno but I'm not sure if there's anything else without any modifing of things. I would be willing to get different brackets to hold it on, but not sure about it.

How did you figure what size you needed?

No problem. I checked out a bunch of pictures and posts from other people and basically copied what they did. Unfortunately, I'm not really familiar with the 3rd gens so I don't know if I can help you out much more than that.

That's cool dude thank you for your help. I have some clear vinyl I am going to put down where the cross bar posts go so i can just put some where the fairing touches as well. I just need to figure out which fairing to get and which fairing or brackets fit the oem.

Ah, I almost forgot, one more tip: if you use any clear protective material under your rack mounts, be sure NOT to trim the edges with a razor blade while it's on the car. I was being as gentile as possible, but I still ended up cutting right into the paint and now I have permanent scratches around where my Yakima Q Towers contact the roof. My car is at a point where there are blemishes on every single body panel, so it doesn't bother me too much any more, but at the time I was pretty cranky about it.

Alright thank you. I'm hoping to cut the vinyl out before I put it on the car so I should be okay.

I've had the factory rack on my '09 STi for 4 years for skiing and cycling and loved it. It's for sale now, incidentally.

It's designed to screw into threaded plates on the roof water sill, that are covered with a hatch when not in use, and so it doesn't affect any door sill.

I had no issues marking up the finish even after extended use, and never used a protective film.

It a good choice.

Alright thank you. Mine just came today and I have clear vinyl to put down. I'm not taking any chances.
