Exclamation turbo surges while spooling

hi im sotra new to the wrx family but i bought a 02 wrx wagon with a blown turbo and i replaced the turbo with an 07 sti turbo and the sti downpipe and exhaust and i originaly heard a whistle with the surge but i fixed that it was a boost leak but now it runs great besides when you get past first gear (automatic) when the turbo spools you can gear and feel it loose boost and gain it back like the waiste gate opening prematurely of some thing but im not 100% im also reading a p0304 code which is missfire cylender 4 idk if that would have anything to do with itcuz it doesnt miss under a load just at idle but back to the turbo i was wondering if it could be fixxed or if i just need to tune it

A tuner would be a great start. Your ECU wasnt designed to run that turbo. Its nothing like the TD04 thats stock in your car.

It should be a VF 43.

"IHI Series Turbo Specs:

The IHI VF39 comes stock on the 04-06 US Market STI, and is a well proven upgrade path for the WRX.
The VF39 uses a thrust bearing setup with a P18 exhaust housing capable of 285 whp on the EJ20. If you are considering the VF39, we highly suggest checking out the VF43 as it is a more efficient setup in the same class.

The IHI VF43 comes stock on the 2007 STI. It has almost identical features of the VF39 with a thrust bearing and a P18 exhaust housing, but the wastegate opening is larger to relieve boost creep issues. The VF43 is capable of 290 whp on the EJ20.

The IHI VF48 comes stock on the 2008 STI. Not much is known about this turbo yet as it has only recently been introduced, but numbers in the 300-315whp range have been produced with this turbo when tuned aggressively."

oops, didn't see he got it off an 07sti

Was that the only boost leak ? Did you use a tester or a smoke test?

Or you just could stop wondering why a much larger turbo is surging on a map that is made for a TD04-13T turbo. It needs the boost leaks fixed and then it needs a proper tune or it will never stop surging.

You installed a larger turbo without tuning for it. It will not run properly. You may not be getting enough fuel... You might be overboosting... There are all kinds of issues that could lead to a misfire.
