Hey guys!
What are the signs that I can notice if my turbo is on its way out???
I'm asking cause ever since I went on a fun run with some fellow subarus...
My car started making a very unusual noise..
As the turbo starts to spool around 2000 rpm, there is noise that sounds like the turbine wheel is scrapping the innards of the turbo..
Its like having an electric fan blade hitting a piece of paper at its edges.
Ofcourse, mine is metal sounding...
Already had my whole exhaust (uppipe, turboback) checked. Including the gaskets. Everything is tight.
There is no noise if my foot is OFF the throttle. Meaning there is noise when its starting to spool but when I lift my foot of the throttle, let say around 3500 rpm, noise vanishes!
Also, just the other week, the noise disappeared as my revs went past 5000 rpm.
But this week, the scrapping changes to a whine past 5000 rpm!
I am at a lost!!!!!

It might be, how are your boost levels? Is it still hitting target boost?
symptons sound like when i thought my turbo went bad. turned out in my case it was the gasket on the uppipe.
2 ways to check this:
1. remove the uppipe gasket right underneath the turbo, and inspect it, it will look all messed up of course if it's bad. replace it with a subaru oem gasket if it's bad.
2. take the clamp at the turbo inlet try to get your finger in there and see if u can move the wheel up or down (radial play)or if u can move it in and out (axial play).
after u do that lets us know and then we can go from there. i'm almost betting it's your uppipe gasket though, especially if u have those aftermarket ones, they are made of cardboard like material and are known to go bad.

Hi Strider!
Based on logs using enginuity, my car is boosting at the right levels.
Actually, even my butt dyno tells me my car still "feels" strong when I have a go at it.
Though, here is something funny.
On the dyno, the numbers are down and my boost on the dyno is down as well.

Hi Baller!
Thanks for the reply.
Already did your option 1. Actually, my local tuner also told me about that as well and we put back both oem gaskets for the uppipe.
Noise is still there...
Please bear with me. I don't quite understand your instructions for option 2.
Do you mean to remove the clamp at the turbo that comes from the tube of the air filter box??
Thanks again!
Sounds like it is going bad to me. Mine made a squeaking noise only at like 3k-5k up and down the rpm range. Took it to dealership and they said it was bad and had it replaced. I didn't notice it before but when I got it back I was hitting higher boost. It was covered under Subaru's powertrain warranty which goes to 60k though if you have any mods they may blow ya off. Sorry man, gl
When it makes this noise are you under partial throttle or full throttle? If your just giving partial throttle it could just be wastegate flutter that you are hearing. If you are hearing it under wide open throttle then it's something else.
hey guys...
had the turbo removed to check for shaft play...
it seemed ok but when the shop used a air compressor to spin the wheel..
we saw the compressor wheel spinning in a circle... meaning it wasn't spinning dead center...
So, I replaced it with a 16g that I was supposed to change when all of my stage 3 parts arrive...
The noise disappeared when we were test driving it around but it appeared again but only for a brief moment on my way home...
This noise comes out without warning... I mean I can't tell anymore when it will come out..
Not like before I know when to expect it...
But there was a change...
It now only comes out under throttle not like before even cruising!
Help!!!!!!\
my turbo makes a high pitch whining noise when driving around but it goes away when i stop and when i really get on the car at wot. also just accelerating fast but not wot the sound goes away. i always assumed this was just stage 2 turbo noises. i have a boost gauge and i hit 17psi strong and the car pulls like a beast! isnt the sound normal since you opened up the dp?
