tail lights won't turn off

Does anyone know why my tail lights won't go off? I have disconnected the battery and turned back on and still they stay on. They constantly stay on when key is out of ignition if battery is connected.

This is gonna sound kind lame but did you turn the lamps off with the turn signal indicator column? Thats the first thing I would check, try rolling the light on and off with the column, you may have a faulty relay that's stuck in the open position or even a faulty brake lamp switch.

The universal procedure would be to check the DRL controls first and if that's not it get under your dash and look for the brake lamp switch, its usually attached to a bracket and your brake pedal assembly makes contact with the switch near the pedal hanging hardware. Sometimes the brackets are bent out of whack or the switch fails. You can always check it by disconnecting the switch at the pedal and see if the lamps go out.

To give you more information we need to know the your and model or your vehicle. then we can give you more specific instruction.

Yeah I have checked all the lights to make sure they are off. I have read up a bit on the switches under the brake pedal and how it works but that pin that the brake releases pressure off of for the lights is for the brake lights not the tail lights right? So that still have to do anything with it? Oh sorry btw it's an 2005 subaru wrx impreza

very possible your brake light switch is bad, but on the older models there is a parking liguht switch on top of the steering comlumn that when depressed leaves the parking lights on all the time. it gets pressed while cleaning most times. seen it about 50 times here at the dealership
