Question The strangest noise i've ever heard and cant figure it out

Hey everybody, i've been experiencing an odd noise since i bought my car and i'm pretty familiar with scoobs but cant figure it out.
It's a whine/humming noise sounding at about 40mph+. It almost always sounds at about that speed in 4th gear. It also sounds at highway speeds in 5th under light throttle then gets quiet after acceleration with heavier throttle. Usually gets more quiet as speed get higher. Only silencer delete and K&N drop-in mods. It's tough cause i dont have a good mic so i cant upload a decent vid, but someone help me?

Now correct my logic if i'm wrong:
  • It does not sound at any particular boost level, and the sound gets no louder at higher boost...not related to turbo spool.
  • The sound does not appear in low gears/ low speeds at all, even during deceleration around 40mph...not tranny/differential problem?
  • Does not whine at idle under any rpm range
  • Does not seem to be robbing power, just an annoying noise...
  • Does not sound under acceleration through Cruise Control

Is it even a problem or just another one of those noises that many rex owners face at some point in their lives...

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated, im just plain annoyed with this and i'd love to fix it.

Thanks,

Maybe a bad ground somewhere? I know sometimes in my old contour if I was listening to the radio and accelerated it would cause a radio tuning high pitched squeal (best description I can give you sorry). Didn't happen all the time either, just driving around and speeding up, etc, kinda like you.

Problems that only occur at a specific speed are usually resonance issues caused by a constant vibration. Sounds like an unbalanced wheel or something, maybe the weights that were glued to one of your rims got knocked off? Any chance your rims caked with hardened snow, ice or roadsalt/dirt deposits?

You may want to check the up pipe heat shield. Mine rusted loose at the very bottom and gave a strange, humming, metallic sound. Almost like the turbo was going. I was not audible at idle, but in the ranges you have been talking about are right on for what mine was doing. I had it tacked and the sound when away- however since the shield is so thin the tack broke.

At this time I am living with it, just turning the radio up till i can get to the up pipe.

I hope your problem is this easy of a fix.

jack up the car and check all your wheel bearings. My 2003 did that SAME thing and it was the back right wheel bearing

hmm... all valid points. I doubt its the heat shield, i just got an SPT for xmas and put it on with no change to noise. I thought the wheel bearings might be spent but i havent jacked her up. Its not the radio either, its definately an engine thing. sounds like it is coming from my front right wheel, kinda...somehwere up front. I'll have it in my friends body shop next week so i'll have them take a look with me. I'm just hoping my turbo hasn't shit the bed. At least no one has mentioned turbo issues.

Thanks guys, keep em coming and ill keep you posted.

Regarding the heat shield. The heat shield I am speaking of is the up-pipe. The heatshield is located on the underside of the motor close to the right header, up in the frame of the car. It is very difficult to find.

Again that is what mine was.. I hope yours is that simple..

Good Luck.

now can this problem possibly be my turbo having shaft play? Does anyone have experience with shaft play and can describe it to me? I thought because it never makes noise in low speeds or idle or anything it couldn't be shaft play. Plus it doesn't burn oil/lose boost or anything... But it seems the only explanation because the sound is only audible under acceleration between 40-65mph. Can someone clarify this for me? Is there an easy way to check for play, should i remove the turbo inlet or downpipe to check?
