ok i have an 05 bone stock wrx that i just hooked up a prosport mechanical boost gauge in and tapped it off the line going into the intake manifold right behind the alternator. The restrictor pill IS there and all lines seem to be tight so even in 4th and 5th gear i am only getting 8-9 psi max. this is driving me crazy and really need some help i am new to these cars so please help me figure this out. also there are no cel's either. also we tried resetting the ecu and it didnt help either.
yeah ive pulled through every gear in different ways and still wont but i was poking around under the hood and noticed the bolts for the bypass valve had the corners slightly rounded so i figured someone messed with this and checked and the passenger side bolt is stripped out so i need to replace and heli coil it or something and we double checked the pill was still there and found another one in the "#2 line" the line from tee to wastegaste so i pulled it out and left the one in on the #1 line from turbo to tee and that didnt fix it, i checked the bcs with power and it clicked than sprayed some non chlorinated brake parts cleaner in it and still nothing so i am completely out of ideas, i even tried my buddies boost gauge and it was dead on too so please help me with any tests i can do or things to check..also it hits 9 lbs and stays there steady if that helps and since im starting to think there was some aftermarket parts put on at one time maybe there are some other areas i need to look further into, runs great though just under boosting for some reason.
yes definitely a psi gauge and we switched the tap onto the bpv line and still no difference cannot figure this out...should i just put a mbc on it and turn it up to stock boost?
Did you fix the stripped thread? If it's unrepairable...replace the bpv. No, MBCs are not a good idea. Yeah, its a quick fix...but it's a crap fix. Read the beginning of this link to understand the biggest reason not to use a MBC: CobbTuning.com - How Subaru’s Factory Boost Control System Works Beyond the fact that improper use of a MBC will stress the engine and turbo.
Not exactly true. A MBC, when the car is tuned properly can be a benefit. Kinda getting tired of seeing people say not to use one because it's a crap fix, blow the motor, damage the turbo, etc. If they are not properly used, just like ANY part, can damage the car. Again, you have to be properly tuned to be able to use one effectively. Oh and if I get any knock, the car automatically adjust timing and kicks the CEL on.
In the OP's case, a MBC will be able to help with a diagnosis. If it works, it's possible that the boost control soleniod took a crap on him.
