Steering feels funny

After a cold start-up and going very slow, when I turn the wheel it turns hard at first then easy. When it warms up it seems to go away. If I let go of the wheel at the hard part of the steering, the car will keep going that way when I go faster instead of centering. It happens going forward and backward.

Check the belt and flush the system.Power steering fluid need to be changed just like all the other fluids. As far as centering goes, installing a set of Whiteline steering rack bushings cured that for me.Made the steering wheel snap back to center. But you also gotta remeber if the road has a bad crown on it then the wheels are gonna follow it.

when is the last time you had an alignment? That paired with the bushings, and the flush should cure your problem. Just remember to use, ATF in instead of power steering fluid.

Alignment was spring of '06 and Whiteline steering rack bushings were put in 55,000 miles ago. I just turned 70,000 mi TODAY!!! As for the road I'm talking parking-lot speed in a parking-lot. It's not giving me the same symptoms that prompted me to get the s.r.b's in the first place. Do you think after 55,000mi the bushings wore out again? Mabey they feel different when they wear out because they are not rubber? An alignement is probably due and the fluid has never been changed. Or mabey the rack is just loose. I'll start with that.

How do you flush the rack? Is there a bleeder screw on it?

Some vehicles use ATF as their power steering fluid.

I had to take it to the dealer. It's a 30 min drive so it was warmed up and couldn't get it to screw up for them,so I left it there so they could look at it in the morning. It did what I said it would for them. They say it's a 99% chance it's the shaft that goes to the steering rack from the steering coloum. It's gonna' cost a weeks pay for me to get fixed! Oh well, At least I dont have a car payment any more.

Well I got it back. It was what they said it was. It was the part that joins the steering coloum to the rack. It has 2 u-joints and a bushing and 2 female splined ends. If I'd known that was what was wrong I could have done it myself for 170bucks. I paid 407$ Doh!

did the dealer only replace the shaft, or did they change the Power steering fluid as well as change the shaft?

Asking because what you first described really sounded like a Power steering fluid/pump issue...

Thanks

I held the old shaft in my own hands. One u-joint would only move in one direction and the other u-joint coulden't be moved in any direction whatsoever by hand. Yup,It was bad allright.
