Ok, So I had to take a customer home today and he lived down an insanely long dirt/gravel driveway. It was raining so it was pretty muddy. I took my 06 rex and on the way back I figured Id have a litttle fun at this very open spot that was on the way back.
I was not destroying my car just having a little fun. I didnt redline or go over any big rocks and the terrain was hardly rough at all. I just did a few doughnuts and took a couple turns. I was probably doing it for about 5 minutes then headed back. About 2 hours later I go to run an errand and my car makes a noise kinda like you hear when your brakes need replacing and its touching metal on metal.
I figured there was just some mud and gravel under my car. So I jack my car up on my 2 post lift and pressure wash under my car. Got pretty much every spec of dirt off from under my car. It still makes the sound!!!!!!! It doesnt happen at any specific time but does make the noise every time I drive it.
Maybe you damaged a CV boot? They're only rubber and it would be easy for a piece of debris to cut one... I don't know if that would cause your car to make noise when you drive it though.
Maybe a rock stuck between your brakes. Try going in reverse and forcefully applying your brakes. That's happened and been the fix for a couple people I know.
If it makes the noise at low speeds, grab a friend to walk by you while moving. Maybe you guys can narrow it to a particular spot. My money's on a rock in the brakes though, after your rainy gravely mudbath.
is it coming from the rear, around the wheels. also it stright up sounds like you have no break pads right. because if that is the case rest assured you just bent the break shield.
Yes it sounds like it is coming from the rear. but I never hit anything to bend something. how exactly do you bend a break shield??? the place I did it was honestly just a huge flat area of gravel and mud.
Yep, it's a rock between the backing plate and the brake rotor. A prybar and a little wheel spinning usually does it. I get it all the time when they chip coat the roads around here.
I had the same problem when I visited the wifes parents. They lived on a LONG gravel road. Take the advice of the above posts and it should solve your worries. Good luck with it.
k thanks a lot guys. ill try it tomorrow morning. Ill let you guys know. and by the way, what should be boost be at. Im stock except for grimmspeed downpipe and cobb accessport running stage 2 92 octane. Im at 14.1 max that it has shown on the accessport
Your boost numbers are just about right. According to Cobb's Stage 2, 93 Octane map notes for an 06/07 WRX, the boost target is ~15.2 psi (+/- 0.7 psi) peak boost pressure tapering down to ~10 psi, depending on vehicle and conditions.
Be sure to give us an update after you mess with your brakes. I'm sure everybody is curious if that was, indeed, your problem.
i am sure that it is the break shield, but their are two types of grinding the break shield actually being bent. and than their is a little metal lip on the inside of the rotor that also gets bent. the first one is an easy fix, but here is some more info on the second one, Let's Find An Answer To This Semi-Common Problem - Page 2 - NASIOC
This morning I went in reverse and hit the breaks hard. So far I have drivin for probably around 20min today and no noise yet. I will probably have time to check break shield tonight. Ill let you guys know.
YES! This is sad, but I think this is my first correct diagnosis here
Diagnosing over the internet is hard though, anyway I'm glad you fixed it cheap and easy.
