Okay normally I can solve pretty much any issue with my car, but I am truly stumped. I recently put in a ej207, new water pump and thermostat, timing belt, radiator, etc. Well I got the car running, burped the coolant system and even let it idle for 20+mins and it ran fine. I've been driving the car to work and no issues what so ever. Today I drove the car to get an alignment done and it started running hot, went to pick the car up, checked the coolant level and it was fine, started to drive home and it started to overheat. I have been trying to diagnose this thing all day and have been scratching my head....
Here's a break down of what I've checked;
Compression shows nothing lower than 154psi(I assumed the worse here and figured I'd check for a blown HG)
No coolant in oil
No bubbles in oil
No white smoke out of exhaust
Pressure test shows the system is keeping pressure.
I am getting coolant flow so water pump is working.
The hoses are hot to the touch and not collapsing, so I would assume the thermostat, is working.
Radiator cap worked on previous engine and I had a good spare and swapped it out and still overheated.
Radiator was also used on previous engine and never had an issue. I am to the point of taking it somewhere and letting them figure it out as I am running out of patience, that or simply just sell the damn thing and buy a bicycle to ride:| Maybe I'm missing something, but it's odd how I've done many engine swaps in these cars and never had an issue like this..
Thanks in advance,
Keith
Well that is what I did this evening...I will have to finish up tomorrow because I am worn out from a bunch of other stuff. All signs point to it being air in the system somewhere, but I just can't see how
Yes both fans kick on, when I first finished it I let them cycle through a few times without issue.

what thermo are you using? and is the jiggle pin in the nothern most position? i forgot about the jiggle pin before and it caused overheating. also have had numerous aftermarket thermos fail. now i always use an OEM thermo
Factory Subaru unit. I swapped out thermos last night burped system and started car up, let it idle for a while, nothing. Drove it around my block and it started to raise beyond where it should. Both the coolant reservoir and the the overflow tanks are at the full levels. Oddly after I start the car and the coolant starts to pump through it will flow out of the res tank when I leave the cap off. I keep getting the impression there is still air in the system somewhere....

Yes that's part of the normal burping procedure, heat on high using floor position while the car idles.
Today I went through the whole thing again, filled coolant etc. started car let it idle for 25mins with the heat on. Now I have almost no heat and yet the car held stead temp. with cap off, put the cap on and temp started to raise. Let car cool, proceeded to go through everything again, after 15mins steady temp, put new Subaru cap on, same thing. I am at a lose right now.
So far I have gone through 6.5 total gallons of coolant and an entire bottle of Water Wetter, 3 thermostats, 2 water pumps, 2 radiator caps and a radiator....
14psi what I believe the stock Subaru cap is. No sensor was not damaged I checked everything before putting the motor in car. Only sensor that was bad was the IACV. I'm not getting any codes either, so I'm not completely sure what to do, but the car is overheating as you can hear the coolant boiling. I suppose I will have to simply sell the car as I don't have the time nor patience to work on it anymore. This car has cost me to much money from not running correctly and I need something that I can drive for distance father than a few miles.
Are you getting any smell of coolant? at all? Maybe there is a tiny ars leak somewhere. If the heater core goes could it cause this problem? Can you bypass that and try again?
So after messing with the car most of the day yesterday and not getting anywhere, no heat I figured there had to be an air pocket in the heater core and I could flush that when I got home. I was driving home from work and decided why not try the heat. Well now I have heat and I let the car idle for a bit after I got home and it stayed steady. Might try and take it for a longer drive to see what happens. If it was just an air pocket then I will be happy, if not then back to the drawing board.
So after a week of driving and one of those days driving almost 50miles and letting the car idle for over 30mins. car was running fine, until today. I drove it to the gas station, which is only 2 miles from my house, and on the way home it started overheating yet again. I let the car sit for almost 2hrs. and upon removing the cap it puked about a gallon of coolant all over my recently cleaned garage floor. This car is making less and less since lately....
from what youre saying, you seem to be overheating only on short trips.
just guessing now but maybe the short drives arent getting the thermo up to temp to open and circulate coolant properly and overheating when you sit. but your longer trips you get up to operating temp and coolant circulates fine.
also being a semi- closed deck it runs hotter, maybe thats a contributing factor since your baseline numbers will be higher
just throwing out ideas maybe get the ticker going
I drive the same distance to work everyday and even let it idle at work for a while and it never overheated....
