Well I was driving around last nite on the interstate. I came up on a GTI, I was just cruising at 61MPH (I-5) when this guy tried to accelerate on me. Please forgive me as the idiot in me took over. Instead of just staying at speed I went and dropped down to 4th gear. Well my car got to about 65MPH when it just stalled for a split second, backfired, and then my cruise and Check engine lite came on. I threw the code P0244 (AP reads as: Turbocharger wastegate solenoid "A" range/performance) I have the Cobb AP (obvious one there) flashed to stage 2 91OCT, and the Cobb TBE. It was about 33 degrees last nite also. I was hesitant to reset the ECU, but I did eventually. The car drove fine after the CEL came on, and drives fine after I reset it. Looked under the hood this morning, nothing out of the ordinary, at least to me. I still hit boost, builds normally,no funny noises. I have been looking at this all morning, searching around, my eyes do kind of hurt from reading. Im basically just wondering if the car is alrite and if it was just a boost spike due to the colder air and whatnot? Sorry for the long post and the paranoid state of mind.
I'm going off of dumdum's words. The TD04L-13T's wastegate is too small for the 2.5 engines and I'm assuming the low temps allowed for a overboost spike to happen. It should be fine. Sorry, I messed up the wheel size in the p/m.
Kind of upsets me considering I was smart enough, or reasearched enough about EM. I really honestly dont want the tune yet, let alone hae the money. I really am trying to save for sways/endlinks next. Guess I will keep a close eye on it this week before I go on vacation. Sorry for wasting a thread for paranoia, but thanks guys.
Not a big deal, it's just a boost spike due to the cold weather. I've had that happen a lot before I MBC in. Do I suggest using one, not unless it's neccessary.
Thanks taxi, I have so many things I really want to do to the car. One of those is the 3 port BCS with the tune, but I really want some sways/endlinks also. Still saving the money for either option at the moment.
MBC is crap... 3 port BCS fixes the problem without taking away control from the ECU on the boost. CobbTuning.com - How Subaru’s Factory Boost Control System Works If anyone wants some good reading. But, the MBC robs the ECU control of the boost at certain times and it can hinder performance more than it could help. Will it be a big hinderence? Probably not, but a MBC incorrectly adjusted can cause engine detonation.
Quick exert from that link:
"We would like to go into further detail about the safeguards and advanced tuning features that are available through the AccessTUNER software. The boost control system uses a closed-loop targeting system which does everything it can to make the boost control system consistent. By employing this closed-loop boost control system the electronic control unit (ECU) can use its speed to bring down boost in over boost situations and raise the wastegate duty cycles for under boost situations. The stock boost control system is much faster than any human analysis and input; we highly suggest you use it to your advantage. In some vehicles, the boost control system can set higher boost targets up to a certain miles per hour (MPH) or bring boost targets down after a set MPH. Some vehicles allow you to tune boost by the different gears you are operating the motor in. Most critical is the fact that the ECU (on DBW vehicles) forces the boost control system to shut down completely (so the vehicle runs mechanical boost pressure) if detonation events are continuing to occur. This bit of safeguard makes the factory boost control system far superior to any aftermarket boost control system, in our opinion. Once the stock boost control system is fully understood, you will find it easy to tune on internally or externally wastegated turbos."
Way to push the link again Kirt, lol. I have read it before (not being a prick, lol). I called my tune shop, PIA. I think they might give me a decent deal on their 3 port BCS (similar to Perrins they said) along with a tune. I just have to wait till my birthday and get it and a bigger TMIC, and then back to saving for sways.
Thanks for that link. I have it also and have it memorized, hence why I actually run the Cobb catted TBE. Plus I know that a cat doesnt rob me hardly if any power as of right now.
Everyone else thanks for the input. I think I will be leaning towards a bigger TMIC, fuel pump, maybe injectors, and a 3port BCS with tune after my birthday in February, guess the sways will have to wait.
Wow, I didn't know that sort of thing could happen because of the low temperature... At least it still drives fine and everything. I've seen cars that boost spike and blow stuff up.
And one good thing about using the ECU to control boost rather than bypassing it with an MBC is that you get helpful codes like he did. When you do get a spike so you can catch it the FIRST time rather than having it happen repeatedly until something does blow up. Having your car break should not be the first indication something is wrong. When people take shortcuts like using MBCs instead of proper tuning, that's exactly what happens.
Electronic or manual, they are both ECU-bypassing, manually ADJUSTABLE boost control.
The name EBC is a bit of a misnomer. It's still really a MBC, it's just one that uses an electronic controller rather than a manual pressure control device. Either way, they are BOTH versions of MANUAL control. The EBC's just a slightly fancier way of doing it.
Personally, I like my MBC. I had a 3 port and the boost curve wasn't right even with a proper tune. With the Hallman Pro, properly adjusted, the curve is exactly what it should be.
What, Kirt, you havent seen that one? I have that along with MY exhaust, YOUR BCS link, and a couple other ones. Better book mark it, or I will use it before you, lol.
