Losing oil and have over 40,000 miles?
Well, this is apparently a common problem with all Subaru's across the board, but I don't know how widely known it is. If you are losing 1-2 quarts of oil per change and owned the car for several years or many miles (3-4 years, 30k-60k miles).
Put your car up in the air and check out the bottom of your timing cover (black, in front bottom of the engine). If it looks like it's dripping oil from the cover or the bottom of the cover is just covered in a layer of oil, one of your front seals probably went bad. It's more than likely your crank seal, but it could be any of the 4 cam seals also. Mine went bad around the time I needed a timing belt which is perfect timing (no pun intended) since you need to get in there to access either anyway.
I gotta run, but I'll post part numbers when I get back.
