Idle problem, Smell problem

First problem I am having is fluctuating idle. My idle has always been fairly low, but recently it seems different every time I turn on the car. Sometimes when I turn it on, I will be idling from 1500-1600 rpm's or more, and sometimes it won't even be 1000 rpms and sit around 900 or less. When it is sitting over 1500, I will rev from park just a little bit and then it will fall to smaller idle. After driving/while in traffic, my idle will be closer to 500 rpms. So as you see, there is no constant and it has been worrying me. My car has also just "felt" like it hasn't been running great lately and so I was wondering what could be causing this day-to-day fluctuation?

Second, the last few days upon turning on my A/C I am getting a somewhat rotten smell, anyone know what that may be coming from?

Ps- My only mods are a catback and AP stage 1.

Sorry for the long story folks, but I appreciate the help

One easy statement is that the idle will flucate when the car is warming up. IE...higher until the car warms up. But, if it's still flucating after it's warm. Then the need to investigate further is required.

Did you turn the A/C on and off quickly? If you did....its probably because the system didn't get to fully activate. I've noticed that it does that on just about every vehicle I've driven in. If it wasn't used in a long time and you just started turning it on. Probably the same thing...the system is probably flushing out all the bad crap that staginated inside.

I haven't done anything since maybe may, when I went stage 1. It didn't happen until the last month or so, so thats why I thought I would ask for help. I think the MAF would be a good place to start, I also hear the IVAC.

@turmic, ya I think that is probably it. With the weather cooling off I haven't been using my A/C everyday. I left it on for awhile after it started making the smell and it went away, so I wanted to make sure it was ok though.

Thank you muchhh

If it ends up being the IACV... get a new gasket before playin with it or taking it off... think they are relatively cheap.

Have you changed out the stock air filter yet ?

Is it the stock air filter or a drop in aftermarket?
