Over the weekend, I installed a new ERZ downpipe on my 2004 WRX with 71,000 mi. We were going to do the UP as well, but it is beyond our capability so we just went with the DP and a re-flash from OSECUroms.org. I decided to log the car to check out what was going on and my exhaust temp was 1200 deg.!!! HOLY SHI*! My friend says that we should also change the muffler and that should take care of the problem so we did to some POS Autozone crap that he had laying around his house. So I was driving home and I keep smelling my exhaust and then I notice that my exhaust is coming through my AC vents!!! Once I finally made it home, my back bumper is melted all to hell. My boost gauge says im getting boost, car feels stronger, but something is wrong. I dont hear the high pitched whine from exhaust leak...but I dont know what else to do. Im scared to drive my car cause I dont wanna blow it up. Please guys, help me out.
did you put the sucka back to stage 1? did this fix the problem? you would probably be better off with no muffler than that auto zone pos! good luck id say take it to ''tow it'' to the shop.
how would flashing back to stage 1 help when the equipment is there to run stage 2? isnt that dangerous? the muffler was NOT my idea. My friend was all like "Dude, the reason this is happening is becuase you have backpressure keeping your exhaust from free flowing becuase you have a 3" dp flowing to your stock exhaust. You HAVE to have a full exhaust before you put on a dp or your just gonna screw up your car. I swear to God dude, you have to do what I say or your gonna blow your car up" and after being up for over 24 hrs with all the bs that we went through and other things I was just like screw it, do it so I can go home.
well maybe the flash is f*&^* i dont know but if you put it back and your car runs fine then it aint gonna kill it!! then try re downloding the stage 2
? unless you have a leak its probably your car is running lean=hot and you better let it cool down and flash stage 1 or redownlode stage 2 probly a bad downlode thats what i would do if the car was running fine before the dp and stage 2 map
Are you running a cattless setup? If you are it's normal for it to be super stinky. As far as melting your bumper ...your tip is probably too close, get some aftermarket extensions.

I havent driven it since I brought it back home. lets look at it from this angle as well. The ERZ Downpipe came with 2 gaskets. I used the factory OEM Subaru gasket between the turbo and dp. but when we got to the dp to catback section, the OEM Subaru Gasket was too small to fit between the 3"dp and 2.5" Catback so we had to use the ERZ Gasket. My retarted friend also said a little while ago that he used some type of heat treated copper liquid weld around the gasket so that it wouldnt leak. could this be the culprit? but in theory, or in my theory if it was in the center of the car, how could exhaust be coming in through the ac vents?
I'm pretty sure I know whats causing you to have exhaust in your AC but I'm not sure why your running so hot. You DP is probably rubbing against your AC overflow tube that comes out of the firewall. This melts the tube and since you reused your old gasket the seal probably isn't that great and your leaking some exhaust there. This is a problem with a lot of aftermarket DPs around. Buy a genuine gasket, don't use the ones they give you with the dp as those are usually trash. Not sure what you can do about the ac line, if it gets plugged you'll start leaking water into the car which can develop mold and turn pretty nasty.
you are exactly right, I went and checked under the hood and sure enought, the tube from the AC line was rubbing the dp, its burnt pretty bad, but just on one side. if I wrap it in some high heat tape, should take care of it ,right?? Or atleast take care of it long enought so that I can order a new heatshield since I couldnt cut the other one. I still have it, just not running it right now. I used a factory subaru gasket there between the dp and turbo and I have the bolts as tight as I can possibly get them also, if I just tuck the line to the side for a bit, I should still be good to drive right? once we installed the muffler I relogged my car and it was running around 900 deg. thanks for all the respones guys keep em coming.
I was just going to say the AC drip tube was melting, but someone beat me to it. Just snip it off so that it doesn't touch the downpipe but still sticks out from the firewall. I did that 3.5 years ago and still no problems.
k, with that problem solved, anyone have any ideas of why running so hot or is it just me being paranoid? should i reflash? should i get the up installed asap??
get rid of the POS muffler, it might be partly because you have no heat shield on turbo, which in turn is also creating higher egt readings. get heat wrap and a heatshield.
just my pennies
ive never done any datalogging and couldn't tell you what normal temps are, im not sure what range it should be in
