How can I tell if my cat had been gutted?

So I picked up my speed3 last month, a year after getting rid of my WRX and I think the cats been gutted out. The exhaust is stock but it's pretty loud and there is a weird smell that i pick up every once in a while... Any help would be great.

so stock its not even funny...just kinda sad :(

Have you looked under there..checked for leaks/cracks? Those are symptoms of a bad cat or a pipe leak as well. Just cause there's no CEL doesn't necessarily mean the cat's not on it's way out know what I mean. I doubt if everything else is stock on the exhaust (stock tune?) then the cat hasn't been gutted.

I'd get under there and have a look around. There are 2 cats. One in the DP and the other in the midpipe.

Take the midpipe out and look in there. When the MP is off and the cat is still there, still somethng long in the DP to see if it's still there.

Only way that I know of.

The sound could be a resonator cut out previously.
