Hey all, what are the signs and symptoms of a fuel pump going out?
Here is my problem, I have having some hesitation/power loss issues, at mid-to-full throttle, almost like the car is starving for fuel. Boost is fine, it never flucuates on my gauge, and as far as I can tell no leaks. So my thinking is the problem must be fuel/spark related. So far I have done the following:
Changed spark flugs and fuel filter, cleaned MAF, reset ecu, used fuel injector cleaner.
The problem is worse when its cold outside, when i reset the ecu its better but only for like a day then the problem returns.
My car is a 03' bugeye with the following mods:
cobb accessport running the stage 2 91 octane map, catless bellmouth downpipe, k&n drop in filter. My problems started shortly after going stage 2.
So my thinking now is that maybe the fuel pump is just not able to keep up with the demands of stage 2? The car runs and idles fine, its just when I increase the throttle past the 1/2 way point. So my next guess is to replace the fuel pump and see what happens.
Any thoughts??
And now a fuel pump question, should I replace mine with a stock unit, or with a walbro pump? I have no plans of changing injectors ect, will the walbro unit run fine on my stock fuel system? Any help/thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
well i would buy a walbro 255 pump i mean they are cheap and sounds like it wouldnt hurt by you getting one anyways man, i would stay out of boost as much as you can cause if your pump is going bad you will be running lean and that is no good, if you can get a fuel pressure gauge or go to a garage and see if you can have them hook one up really fast to see what your pressure is at, but i would buy a walbro anyways.

Yes it will, the only thing is i would be careful on where you buy the walbro from, on ebay they say it is a walbro but they are a cheaper off brand and they are lound and they dont last as long, i have done research on them and some company bought alot of off brand walbro pumps and are selling them cheap. my friend bought one off of ebay and it worked great for only like two months, and i was like what the heck so i started to look around, i would buy one off of some website other than ebay. but thats just me man,i just thought i would give you the heads up
Thats sounds like a similar problem that happened to my neighbor. He would give it gas and around 3500-4000 rpm there would just be no power. turns out his flywheel was cracked and clutch went because of it.
plus one to the walbro pump! friend drives a supercharged mustang and before he got his walbro he was running the stock fuel pump and injectors and around like 4 or 5 rpms in 3rd he would loose power replace the fuel pump man.
sounds like I'll be trying a new fuel pump, where is the cheapest place to buy one? I have found on gruppe-s for 90 shipped. Anyone else have any ideas as the what my problem could be?
well you said yourself that you boost does not change meaning same amount of exhaust is traveling through the turbo. Meaning that your engine is still getting fuel. is there a chance the problem is not creating the power but just getting the power to your wheels? just a thought.
not saying its not the fuel pump but just thinking of other possible reasons.

oh im sure its a possibility, hence me coming to you all for help. doesnt "seem" like clutch or tranny issues though.

Install was easy, only took 45 min-1 hour, then I reset my ecu and so far so good. Car pulls hard through every gear with no hesitation! (yet) I guess the stock pump couldn't keep up with stage 2 and it was making me run lean. I'll have to give the ecu a week or so to learn and see what happens before I'll know for sure though. But overall a big improvement.
