I know someone else has had this problem but i was having a hard time finding anyone's problem that sounded exactly like mine. BTW the car is a 02 wrx 115k miles with nothing but cobb intake/exaust. So here it is...for the last month or so when im 3500-4500 the turbo feels like is surging real bad and it will pop, the engine will cut out temporarily and kick on the check engine light. The car feels like its struggling before it pops. If anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure what code its throwing because I dont think it will throw the code unless its hooked up when it pops, since the light goes off after a day or so I'm assuming unless it cuts out its not throwing the code. I can't get it to happen unless I'm in 3rd/4th or 5th..but I can definately feel it struggling in every gear through 3-5k rpms. What does EM stand for?
I had something like you are having in my 02 the pickup in the gas tank was pluged and it would not get the gas it needed you should put in a new pump if you do your pickup good luck
thanks for the advice, is there any sign visually that I should replace it? I've replaced them before in my old car which was a '00 2.5 rs but it seemed like when it went out it cut out really bad like almost undrivable and then died almost immediately. It seems to surge almost all the time now and the popping doesnt seem healthy at all.....

This is your problem. If you don't have a tune, the car is going to flip out. You are hitting boost cut since you are now spooling the turbo faster, the boost control solenoid is flipping out.
So taxi you're suggesting that I get my car tuned? I didn't know if I needed to or not with just exhaust/intake. If so you know a good place around here to have it done?
With an intake you wouldn't need it but with the exhaust, especially a catless one, you'll need one. I've got a base tune I can put on your car since you're close.
You'll want to get a catless uppipe soon since our cars are known for eating the uppipe cat. It's not an immediate thing but it should be the next move you make.
i got the code checked out, apparently the code is 0244, "the voltage signal for wastegate solenoid "A" is out of range for the current engine operating conditions"... probably still the tune?
this is my first turbocharged car so I'm not quite sure what needs to be done here, if anyone can give me some insight on what my next step would be that would be great, hopefully whatever it is it will be covered on my warranty, or better yet a job I can do.
Yeah, it's the tune. The code is telling you that it overboosted and the reason it's only happening in 3rd, 4th, and 5th is the BCS (boost control solenoid) is limiting the boost when in 1st and 2nd gear. The reason you are getting overboost is twofold, one is the fact that with the exhaust you have, the turbo can spool up faster and the car doesn't realize this. The second reason is that it's cold out, air is denser. The second one isn't the cause of the CEL though. Usually you'll only get a pound or two of overboost due to cold weather. Since you are most likely still on the stock map, you're overboost threshold is 17.4 psi. It's not good for the car and that's why it cuts out on you. As I said in my PM to you, I have a tune that will work on your car to get you by temporarily. I've got it on two other 02s and they seem to enjoy it.
yah, same here.it migt be the same problem i have with my wrx.my hks ssqv bov seem to whistle loudly even when my foot is still on the gas pedal and it feels like something is going to blow.then it happened, the car died on me and in one occasion it died multiple times.i live in winnipeg canada and the weather here is really cold it's not even funny.so it might be the boost control solenoid?should i get subaru dealership to check it out?
