Question fast idle/engine stays at high rpm after revving

I had driven my car for about 30 mi. , pulled in to a store left my car at idle for approx 15 min. When I got back in to drive off the car was idling @ 1500 rpm which is higher than normal for my car once it is up to operating temp. I tried to rev the engine ,thinking it may fall back down to normal idle. It didnt, rpm stayed @ 4000 even without touching the accelerator. After a few seconds it would fall back to 1500 rpm .So I tried it again with the same results. I made sure the floor mat was'nt holding down the accelerator . A few days later when I had driven my car parked it for 15 min , started it up and started driving it pretty had .Between shifts when throttle was closed it took a long time for engine to fall back down to normal idle. Has anyone had a similar problem?

i have had some problems with cust. cars that had issues with the adjustment of the cruise cable. quick check is to open the hood when its doing it, and look at the throttle cables....see if the throttle plate is all the way seated. it should be against the stop. you can take your hand, and see if you can rotate the throttle anymore in the direction opposite of cable pull.

usually, readjusting the cable will solve issues.

for some reason, it only happened when it was warm outside too....
