engine whine

recently my car has started to whine and i think its coming from the alternator. the only thing is nothing electrical is messing up no problems driving just a horrific whine everytime i get on the gas which gets progessivly louder the more i get on the gas. loud enough a random guy at the gas station asked if i had a supercharger under the hood... not good. my boy told me it was the bearing in the alternator pulley going but im not so sure the bearings could make the car whine that loud and obnoxious. anyone have any ideas? delt with the same problem? any input would help i just dropped 2 grand into my car last month and cant afford a costly repair bill.

whine reply

i just got a whine also but it was low power steering fluid the suby alternators are junk. ive replaced mine with a reliable cs130 220 amp unit it cost me 275.00 and some 3 or four hours of cutting and fabbing the stock aluminim brackets. you can use a trick to determine the source of the noise, put a screwdriver handle to your ear and touch the other end to the alt housing and the other various accessoried like ps pump or ac compressor but bee careful of loose clothing and moving parts. a mechanics stethiscope is a little safer but this will do the trick heres a link to my site with my cs130 mod pics. good luck joe.Bug Pictures Volkswagon's with Subaru Motors

That sounds like power stearing or somthing else that is belt driven. I olso have a new strange whinig sound, and at first I thought it was the power stering unit, but it wasn't low on fluid. It was low on coolant, but hasn't gotten low since. The whine dosen get louder when I accelerate, but does slightly when I decel. It's probably the loudest at highway speeds. It kinda sound like it's coming from the back of the alternator. (either alt or somthing else near it) but I'm thinking of replacing/upgrading the timing belt anyway just to be on the safe side since I'm over 50000 miles.
