Question Engine making a ticking noise. Video Clip!

Stock 09 WRX.

I just bought it 2 weeks ago to the day. I've never noticed this noise until last night. I'm just wondering if this is normal. The sound is coming from both sides of the engine. I searched around and couldn't find any topics that really pertained to this issue. To me, it sounds a little like lifter noise like on a V8, but these are OHC engines, so that can't be it.

Any help or information is greatly appreciated. I don't want to drive an hour to my Subaru dealer if it's nothing to worry about.

Here's a video clip.

Sounds like a lot of valve tap. But, its hard to tell because it sounds like a lot fan in the video also. Flat-4s can have a lot of valve tap at times. Sometimes changing your oil to a better kind will get rid of it.

The dealer uses 5w30 synthetic. Is valve tap something to worry about? Sorry, this is my first OHC vehicle.

Its called the subaru tick. It confuses a lot of first time buyers at times.

After doing some more reading, could using 89 instead of 91 cause this? The fuel door on the car says to run no less than 91. When i filled up, 89 was the highest available. I was on a road trip and small towns = 89 if you're lucky out here.

You can run 89 if necessary as long as its not too hot outside and you are not really pushing the engine. But, then put some 91 in as soon as you can.

um, with how picky these motors are, I would never run less than 91 octane.

I realize that sicc soul. It was either 89 or nothing, didnt really have a choice. Would some octane boost help, or is that even worth it?

Damn, yeah...I'd say 89 oct probably would make it knock/tick louder than normal. Octane booster doesn't do as good as a job as its advertised. But, you could give it a try.

Actually, you "could" try a gallon of corn and then fill up on 89... might help if they had it there.
