Drivetrain Chatter. What is it??

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVep...e_gdata_player

Above is a link to the sound I'm talking about. Had to put the phone on the ground for better audio. Its a metallic whirring noise that can be heard on decel (clutch engaged or not) while in gear or in neutral. This sound is augmented by holding in the clutch while moving which is what the video is showing. I've ruled out throwout bearing due to the fact that this only happens while moving, and the sound either speeds up PR slows down with the rotation of the tires. Keep in mind that I have all poly bushings around trans and crossmember. Shifts perfect still. New clutch and throwout bearing along with flywheel put in at dealership before I took it home. Any ideas?

Yes, all stock in the drivetrain. Replaced rear diff fluid about a month ago. No metal bits, but the fluid looked relatively new. Maybe a yr old. Guesstimation.

Too hard to tell exactly from the footage, but In my experience the 5speeds are just noisy. It's especially apparent since you have poly bushings which are transmitting the sound to the chassis better than the rubber stock mounts do.

Could be transfer case/extension housing bearings.

I'm hoping its just the normal noise. I can hear the sound "altered" as I shift too, which I'm also hoping is a clue that it's just trans noise. Sanity check, please!

Yessir I will probably do it for a sanity check at the very least. The fluid level is good and the fluid itself is transparent-ish and pretty. Is there a "cocktail" to mix up specifically for noisy gearboxes? I was thinking of going the andrewtech route...

Suby extra S for stock boxes is my 2¢

Many will disagree..... Is the stuff red that's in there? Could always try throwing a 1/2 qt of Redline heavy duty shtuff if it's too noisy.

Although, being noisy when cold is a little weird. The fluid should be at it's thickest until hot/warm.

No it's yellowish in color. And I suppose it does get louder when it heats up. The video was taken when everythang was warm.

smfh

They probably dumped Mobil1 or Pennzoil in there.

Go to the dealer and take a clean/new 2 gal gas can with you, pick up some Suby Extra S. Bet it'll get better after you change it and then change it again in 5k.

as far as i know all 75/90 and most other types of true Gear oil is yellow(worked at a lube shop for 3 years). Ive never put anything but yellow Gear oil in a manual trans.

I also know that most Red "Gear oil" is actual ATF fluid(Automatic Trans). Hope that helps. Not gospel though.

Sorry forgot to add that the same fluid goes into your Diff's on Subie's as your MT,

Do you know if you have a magnetic drain plug? If so i would drop the fluid and and check for shavings on your plug.(a small amount is no biggie, anything more than the size of a pencil eraser is sketchy) That will tell you if the previous owner was a beast on the shifts or not. Other than that a full re-build might be in order.

I would hold off on additives until you determine the state of your gears. when you drop the fluid, if nothing turns up on the plug i would talk to a local trans shop and see what they think. Dont forget that even good looking fluid can be old and oil of all types breaksdown over time without even being used.
