Probably a Blow Off Valve (BOV). I take it you did not buy your car new and were not given a good description of the modifications that were done to your car?

Sounds like your car has several mods on it. You should seriously consider taking it to a tune shop to have them properly tuned for. Not saying the previous owner didn't do that, but better safe than sorry. BOVs can be extremely damaging to the car if not accounted for. Even if you are going to get a tune, you might consider tracking down a stock BPV to replace it with...

problem is, there is only one mod to the thing(CAI). i wouldn't buy another mans project, seen to much horror in doing. i was also thinking it was the BOV as well. would it be best to stay stock with that? i'm not a big on the whole aftermarket "noise" thing if you know what i mean.
by the way, thanks for the quick reply.

Pop the hood and take a picture. Sounds like he may not have told you what all was actually done under there...

your could be right mosc, to me this engine looks nearly stock but i'm brand new to wrx's.

one more question, are BOV's interchangable between 04's and 02's? i've found one but it's off the newer model

Well, that BPV is stock. You might want to check to make sure the line is running to the intake correctly. It shouldn't be THAT loud when it goes off.

The turbo heat shield looks missing... hard to tell for sure from that angle. That's usually a sign that the downpipe is not stock. Take a picture looking down at the... space... on the left of the intercooler.

BTW, that AEM intake is a serious POS. I suggest picking up a Cobb SRI or the SPT SRI...

It could be the bypass noise coming though the hot air intake.
