Arrow Can you figure it out?!?!

So I had a problem a few days ago. And just for fun I want to see what others would have thought it was. I will give no hints but will answer any questions. When answered it has to be exact. If admins don't care I will even look into sending out a free T-shirt for the winner.

Here was my problem:

Driving on a highway in 90 degree weather. Traffic backed up for miles only moving an inch at a time for an hour. Out of nowhere the rpms slowly started to stay a little higher. Around 1200. a few minutes go by and the rpms slightly climb to 2200. and so on over the next ten minutes it is now idling at a staggering 4200. intake temp read 195. Coolant was going from 195 to 208 (as fans kicked on and off).

What is the issue?

I'm going to guess it climbed only after those short moving distances where you would put it partially in gear for a few seconds and then back into neutral? If so, there might be nothing wrong with it besides an ECU that was trying to be too clever.

The RPMs stayed at the high #'s in neutral at a stop for minutes at a time and never dropped. It climbed more and more as I would go an stop. If I rev'd the car at a stop it made it worse

It got scary...

Cruise control cable. If Im not mistaken there was either a recall or tsb on this. Something heats up and causes expansion which in turn makes the cc cable tighten up and rpm's rise.

I wear xl

Cruise control cable is correct! But!!! not for the reason you stated lol. When i put everything back together from upgrading the injectors and turbo inlet i guess i didnt tighten the locking nuts on the cable.

I will mock up a tee and post tomorrow.

Thanks for playing this game. Maybe i will come up with some more guessing games or what not and have tees as the prize.

I was going to say an idle air control solenoid and/or something on the throttle body is sticking (not returning to its proper place).

Now this problem might not be your problem. My cable adjustment was out of whack due to my failure to tighten everything. So even the next day when my car was cooled down the RPMs stayed high due to the cable being over tightened. If you think this is your issue the easiest way to see is to completely remove the cable from the TB and see if your RPMs stay high.
