blue smoke on start up

whenever i start my car for the first 5 seconds or so it funs really rough and blows a huge cloud of blue smoke. after that it smooths out and runs fine with no smoke. it didnt do it until i changed my oil. i used the same oil and filter as i always do and didnt do anything different when i changed it. what could it be??

in most cases a blue/white smoke is a blown head gasket

Not true...White smoke is typically a Blown HG...BUT blue smoke is typically bad valve stem seals, bad piston rings, broken/cracked ringland, a crack in the valve guide, cracked spark plug threads, blow turbo seals (although this would not be seen at startup usually) or overfilling an over change.

and with what the OP describes it sounds more like a cracked valve guide, or a bad valve stem seal

You COULD try to single it out and that would be your next step... OR.... pull the motor and have done with it.

EDIT: have you sent in an oil analysis lately?

Might tell you if coolant is in the oil or not.... Also, if you do it every once in a while, you can also get a heads up on most problems.

The ECU will still store a code if it ever has had one and not been cleared manually.

Do it now and do a compression test. The plugs themselves will be a pretty good indicator as well. Be prepared for bad news.

This might seem a little easy, but since you said it just started after you changed your oil did you check to make sure it wasn't overfilled? Or maybe double check what kind of oil was used. Maybe it was too light of weight or something. I'd start there and at least change your oil again with the proper stuff before tearing your motor apart.
