Start with your rout of spark, this could all be related and quite simple.

Low compression will cause a misfire code. I'd gonna take a stab at saying your head gasket it split between the cylinders and it evens out the compression to each and that is why your getting an even number...Call me crazy, as some do, but I really think that's it...

That's exactly what happened to two different people that I read about.

Been working w/ a shop about this. I think I'm just going to end up replacing the engine since its only a tad more than a head gasket job.

Yeah, my friend recommended me to a small subaru shop in the city. They had a engine they just rebuilt that they'll sell for about 1,800.

I can replace a head gasket in a day, and that's with drinking a lot of beer...Head gasket kit is about $250-300. If you have the ability and or time do it yourself...

Yeah, I was actually thinking about doing it myself... but I weighed my options ... considering the time ( knowing my skill set and busy schedule, I'll probably take over a month), sweat, blood, stress, space, research, alcohol and smoke intake required .... I decided to pay someone to do the job for me.

I got quotes from all around and was quoted around 1300-1800 for a head gasket job (parts and labor) then I stumbled around this deal and decided to go for it. The builder seemed to be very knowledgeable and had many years of exp working on subarus, WRXs in particular. Total came out to be about 2400 for the rebuild w/ new rods, bearings, head gaskets, bunch of seals and gaskets and install w/ a decent parts and labor warranty from the shop... he also offered to help me install some other stuff for free while he's in there such as timing belt kit w/ waterpump and tensioners, belts, etc, metal turbo inlet, downpipe, up-pipe, catback, and misc. Some may agree and many may not. But thanks everyone for the help! Hopefully, the rebuilt engine will last me a couple years..

Well best of luck to you on that. Wish I could have been more help, but it's and East/West coast thing and the drive time would have killed my mpg for the year...lol
