Backfire after installing ECU

My husband and I got a new ECU put on the car before he went downrange but it backfires ever since we got it installed...It seems to do it a lot more often now than it did in the first week or so. I have been told that the fuel may be running to rich but I don't have a clue. Any comment would be much appreciated! Thank you

Any modifications? When is it backfiring? During shifts, during acceleration, or after letting off the gas?

If there are no modifications and it's only during a shift or letting off the gas, you may get getting a rich condition from the BPV opening. If it's during acceleration, it may be a timing issue.

Are you saying he got a stock replacement ECU or some kind of performance upgrade? If it was upgraded, need to know with what (ECU reflash,Utec,Cobb Accessport) and if it was customed tuned. Also need to know all the engine/exhaust mods.

umm damn lol ok we got a performance upgrade (cobb acessport) the guy traveled over here from the states and did it for us while he was doing work on an Sti a friend of ours owns. After he installed it he went in and did the maps for us. I really don't know much about this kind of thing Basically it backfires when I'm shifitng... Thats pretty much the only upgrade, we were supposed to get a new exhaust at the same time but it didn't come in on time. If Im correct there is no catback in the exhaust...I really don't know much about this kind of thing, sorry if im not answering your questions correctly Its an '02 WRX Turbo charge ...

The afterfiring is normal and will kinda continue with exhaust added.Sometimes more tuning can fix this.It sounds like the guy that came out was maybe tuning the cars as well? Was the car on a dyno machine at any point?Did you see the guy use a laptop computer at all?It won't do any damage to the vehicle and really is quite normal with modded WRX's and actually most turbo vehicles.

Yep, it's normal. I can backfire/afterfire at will with the exhaust I have. It's a great way to get rid of tailgaters btw.
